Position Description

Job Summary

CertainTeed is seeking a talented, and energetic biologist/chemist/materials scientist/engineer to join our team. This position will be responsible for the evaluation of new raw materials for roofing granules and support the development and improvement of existing roofing granules, which will be confirmed through the application of engineering & material fundamentals and statistical tools. The candidate will be responsible for small sub-project objectives and transform them into actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experiments, and analysis of results.

This position will have a focus on research and development in all aspects of the mineral group's technical area. In addition to a strong materials background, this person ideally should have experience in one more of the following areas ceramics, coatings, biocides, and/or microorganisms. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the candidate will also design, run experiments, produce lab-scale samples, and analyze the experimental outcomes. In addition to conducting experiments for the candidate's primary projects, the candidate will be expected to support projects led by others as a subject matter expert on microbial growth in the roofing industry.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other labs and functions in the development of new products for the Roofing market
  • Conducts analytical testing on mineral-based products and process improvements related to the production of residential shingles
  • Must be able to demonstrate familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation
  • Ability to work in a lab or production environment with the ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to build relationships and establish support to drive projects forward
  • Maintain lab notebook to record data related to key projects.
  • Leads small modules including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technology transfer activities. Develops expertise in one or more technical activities (as identified by supervisor), including operation of equipment, data collection, laboratory testing, and basic data analysis
  • Reports project progress through means of communication such as oral presentations, written reports, and laboratory procedures
  • Adhere to EH&S policies, and ability to work in 5s environment while maintaining good lab skills
  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Materials Science Engineering or Materials Engineering, or other similar fields
  • Knowledgeable in microbial growth, ceramics pigments or coatings for the roofing industry is a plus
