What's the job?

The Process Engineer/Specialist reports directly to the Quality and Process Manager. Working collaboratively with the production teams, this person is in charge of Process Control, Optimization and Innovation for an area of the Gypsum Board manufacturing plant. Utilizing World Class Manufacturing (WCM) principles and tools, this position focuses on product formulation, process control and stability, process development and optimization, equipment design and optimization, general project engineering, and trial planning and execution.

  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the process and equipment of an area and is responsible for documenting and sharing this knowledge.
  • Ensures CertainTeed Gypsum's standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into process and equipment solutions utilizing WCM principles.
  • Ensures Process and Product parameters are under control and in specification.
  • Champion of Process and Product Specifications, Control plan, Reaction plans for an area.
  • Participates in training and assessment for operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Analyzes operating problems or process variations, develops solutions, and implements corrective actions by identifying and resolving the root causes. To do so, works in team and uses an array of WCM problem solving tools depending on problem complexity (Quick Kaizen, EWO, Standard Kaizen).
  • Identifies safety, cost and quality improvement opportunities through WCM Loss Analysis and develop solutions of corrective actions.
  • Participates and runs trials to evaluate equipment, process and raw material opportunities.
  • Responsibilities include designing / developing new process systems, revising existing processes, and developing and coordinating the safe implementation of projects, in collaboration with Engineering team, which contribute substantially to plant profitability.
  • Provides support to project teams during delivery phase and commissioning of equipment.
  • Develops and maintains close relationships with key suppliers and contractors for equipment and materials relevant to specific project needs, following CertainTeed purchasing procedures.
  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels.
  • Complies with all environmental standards, assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforces plant rules and safety regulations, and supports Principles of Conduct and Action

Required Qualifications

What you bring...

  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical engineering or EIT or similar discipline; or five (5) years of equivalent training and experience to have comprehensive knowledge of practices, procedures and regulations associated with process control technology may be substituted for a degree.
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Proactive, curious to continuously understand, optimize and innovate.
  • Team player, willing to collaborate with both Salary and Hourly employees.
  • Good written and oral communication.
  • Flexible and open-minded.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of focused improvement (FI) or Kaizen.
  • Previous AutoCAD experience.
  • Understanding of mass & energy balance, flow diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), fluid properties and thermodynamics.
  • Work on, or in possession of, a professional designation (P.Eng).
