Job Summary

Accountability Objective: Applies and executes engineering principles and theories to the development of improved products and processes. Identify and develop systems, procedures and processes to assure required product quality. Maintain cost, machine efficiencies and safety objectives for process/quality functions. This position will also have responsibilities as a WCM project leader. Principal End Results: • Analyze current processes and review specifications to ensure that product is conforming to quality and user standards can be produced consistently. Suggest and/or implement specific process improvements (both short and long term projects) to improve and ensure all of the following objectives are met: productivity, machine and material efficiencies, reduced. • Provide technical guidance to various groups including Making, Cloth Finishing, R&D, as well as other Abrasive facilities, customers, vendors and/or suppliers. Assist the manufacturing organization by furnishing audit feedback and appropriate statistical analysis and interpretation of performance data. • Support factory and/or R&D experiments by collecting data, analyzing the process and making recommendations for improvements. Conduct studies and design experiments to identify process capabilities to determine the necessary procedures to control product characteristics. • Undertake individual and team projects to explore quality and/or process problems and identify corrective action. Provide training and support to manufacturing during the implementation of new processes or equipment. • Utilize SPC and statistical analysis to determine consistency of products. Based on data, implement process or procedural changes to improve product consistency. Communicate results of analysis to supervisors and crews.

Required Qualifications

Nature and Scope: A major aspect of the role is working on daily management system and projects geared toward improving process quality and production efficiencies; these projects may be general and long-range. S/he will work closely with other functions (i.e., Engineering, R&D, Quality, and line supervision) in formulating and implementing process modifications. Specific products and processes are assigned; tasks and expected results are identified. Incumbent meets with his/her supervisor on daily basis to review status and receive direction and assistance in problem solving. The incumbent must work across all levels of the organization including management, R&D and union employees. The Process Engineer provides a basic understanding of engineering principles and assures the technical effectiveness of the inspection function within Operations. The incumbent may be assigned responsibility for several technical areas that involve several concurrent projects and/or processes. Specific functions involve inspection procedure documentation and gauging, as well as maintenance and troubleshooting the quality performance feedback systems relating to rework, quality problems, customer complaints, costs and audit data. Extensive use of quality tools, such as Statistical process control (SPC) and other statistical analysis, are used to determine solutions to persistent quality problems effecting Operations. Statistical analysis will also be used to investigate process capabilities of machines and material acceptance. Projects include routine maintenance of quality systems and troubleshooting problems, which impede the effective operation of quality functions. Team projects may include gathering of inspection data on finished products, analysis of the data and determination of statistically significant shift that may have occurred with the final product. S/he is responsible for reporting and updating the data at product consistency meetings. It is the responsibility of the incumbent to resolve issues once they are identified. Within an assigned area, the incumbent ensures the proper function of the system that has been established to convey customer requirements to production (spec system). Incumbent also makes certain that incorrect information is purged from specification sheets and process systems notes. The Incumbent must also maintain a focus on WCM efforts for continuous improvements, cost, safety and production efficiencies, as well as customer requirements. The incumbent conducts other projects as assigned and works 40+ hours per week and may need to cover other shifts as needed.

Additional Description

Skills associated with a BS degree in an Engineering related discipline or equivalent skills in Process Engineering related work. Incumbent must be self-motivated with good interpersonal skills, computer and communication skills. S/he must have a hands-on attitude, some familiarity with manufacturing processes and product application, and be able to work across all levels of the organization. The incumbent should possess excellent organizational and project management skills, as well as demonstrate superior interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills. The incumbent must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and be able to climb, stoop, lift and walk for a considerable time.
