What You Will Do:

The Senior Fellow, Combustor is a critical technical leadership role at Pratt & Whitney, and is responsible for the overall strength of the combustion related disciplines, processes and technologies. The Senior Fellow is a recognized expert in the field of combustion and works with the chiefs, directors, PFDL and senior executives to set the plans and strategy for P&W combustors in both the long and short term. The fellow will report to the Director of Hot Section-Aero Thermal Fluids in the ATF organization.

  • Lead, define and execute strategies to ensure a multi-disciplinary and balanced approach to delivering world class combustors for current and future PW commercial & military products.
  • Drive both analytical modeling and rig strategy needed to support combustors that meet all metrics & full life at EIS
  • Partner with EDSI and HSE CIPTs in defining balanced requirements and driving design and cycle decisions to meet job ticket requirements.
  • Drive risk-based decision making throughout the product design process, from CICO through validation, leveraging robust design methodologies, state of the art analytical tools, critical rig and engine testing, effective data reduction and knowledge capture/documentation.
  • Develop and champion combustor technology and tool development strategies and roadmaps.
  • Ensure the leveraging, joint maturation and read across of main analytical and computational approaches between augmentor and combustor.
  • Advance the state of the art in both reduced order modeling and high-fidelity simulations: such as screech, combustion dynamics, spray injection.
  • Champion knowledge capture and robust design systems to sustain augmentor discipline health, and mentor the next generation team leaders.
  • Develop and maintain external partnerships with US Govt agencies and universities on critical technology development activities
  • Mentor others in the discipline and the engineering community to ensure a robust succession plan for key roles in engineering.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math with 14+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math with 12+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math with 10+ years of relevant experience
  • 10+ years of work in the area of gas turbine engine combustor design or analysis
  • Proven experience in combustor aerothermal design as well as combustor validation processes, from CICO through validation and fielded engine systems.
  • Patents, peer reviewed papers, or technical committee leadership in the area of combustion
  • Expert knowledge in one or more areas of combustion efficiency, acoustics, stability & combustion dynamics, ignition and piloting, and fuel sprays.
  • Minimum of two required in last 10 years: Patent (IRC Approved, trade secret, patent filed, or patent issued), External peer reviewed paper (from qualified source, co-authorship allowed but limited), External technical committee participant. Significant contributions to a restricted program will be considered.
  • For RTX candidates, minimum of one required last 10 years: Lead at least one TekTalk, authored at least one PW Play, EKS/ESW, KPACK, or equivalent in a secure area, or created and/or taught technical course in area of expertise
  • For RTX candidates, must be advocated by a technical leader within the enterprise at the PFDL and Executive level.
  • For RTX candidates, candidate must meet expectations for all competencies or have development plans in progress with demonstrated documented improvement within Performance Impact.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee's personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 176,000 USD - 352,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
