The Control Systems section within the Sensor Power and Analog Department (SPAD) has an exciting employment opportunity for a Senior Engineer with control system and power conversion experience.

SPAD is responsible for design engineering including the following areas:

  • Power System Design - Power System Noise, System Simulation and Modeling, Solid State Transmitters, Tube Transmitters, High Voltage Design, Power Sources, Generators
  • Power Conversion - AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC, Linear and Switching Supplies, Power Factor Correction (PFC), Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS), Resonant Circuits, Synchronization, Noise Controls
  • Power Distribution - Ground, Air, Shipboard, and Space, Power Generation, Line Voltage, High Current, Low Voltage, Micro-Power, DC, AC, Multi-Phase Power Control, Fault Reporting, Isolation, Protection Circuits, Redundant Systems
  • Power Sub-System Design - Filters, Harmonic Control, EMI, Circuit Simulation, Magnetics, Protective Relay Systems, Short Circuit and Stress Analyses
  • Control Systems - Servo Control Systems, Motor/Power/Process Control, Digital Feedback Systems, Command Generation, Inertial Stabilization, Navigation Algorithms

This position is an onsite role. Regular travel to Tewksbury, MA; Marlborough, MA; Andover, MA; Woburn, MA; and/or Pelham, NH may be required depending on the assignment. Travel to supplier or customer sites may also be required (up to 10%).

What you will do:

In this role you will select power conversion equipment (rectifiers, inverters, filters, etc.) and tune control loops (current, velocity, position, etc.) for integrated electromechanical solutions. The applications range from cooling subsystems (fans, pumps, flow control valves, etc.) to actuators for motion control of radar elements. You will also be responsible for creating and validating simulation models to evaluate system performance and troubleshoot real-system problems.

You will also be responsible for supporting and driving the execution of product development projects. You will be working with a Team/Technical Lead and under the guidance of an Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead. Work is performed in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on execution and engineering excellence, using established business, and engineering tools and processes. You will interact with internal and external customers and leadership team members.

Qualifications you must have:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major.
  • 5+ years of experience in power conversion and/or control system design
  • Experience with at least one of the following: traction systems, servo systems, fan / pump applications, or grid-tied bidirectional converters
  • Experience with high voltage systems at kW power levels
  • Experience in system modeling or design using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Qualifications we prefer:

  • M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major.
  • Understanding of classic control theory and vector control of electric motors
  • Hands-on experience with power electronics inverters used as motor drives
  • Familiarity with induction and permanent magnet electric machines.
  • Prior experience as engineering Team Lead (hardware, electrical or integration)
  • Ability to create system models capturing implementation-specific characteristics such as propagation delays, quantization, sensor non-linearities, etc.
  • Existing US DoD security clearance

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
