The RTX Technology Research Center seeks a research engineer/scientist in the area of optics and photonics to join our Electromagnetics and Network Systems Team. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working in the research and development of advanced optics/photonics devices for imaging, sensing, communication and information processing technologies that impacts aerospace and defense systems. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, they will transition novel concepts from early technology stages to a readiness level that influences RTX business applications.

What You Will Do:

Role responsibilities include supporting the conception and design of novel optical and photonic devices, proof-of-concept demonstrations via simulation, fabrication, and experiments, supporting the preparation of internal and external research proposals, supporting dissemination of research results through reports, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed articles, and development of intellectual property. The candidate is expected to work in execution of the existing projects as well as contribute to develop new research programs.

The preferred candidate will have a strong understanding of science and engineering principles, knowledge of emerging techniques, materials and structures for photonics and optic and a record of innovation as evidenced contribution to projects/programs, by patent applications, and/or high-quality journal and conference publications.

Education:

M.Sc. with a minimum of 6 years of experience or PhD in Physics, Engineering or a related field.

Qualifications You Must Have:

Strong background and understanding of optics and photonics, for diverse applications such as sensing, communication and imaging.

Self-motivation, excellent written/verbal communication, strong collaboration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills with track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, and initiative.

Hands-on experience with designing and performing optics/photonics experiments, and/or fabrication of optical/photonics structures.

Qualifications We Prefer:

Expertise in one or more of the following areas: integrated photonics (e.g., photonic integrated circuits, heterogenous integration, nano-photonics, optoelectronic devices), quantum optics/sensing/communication, optical component and system designs, non-linear optics, optical metamaterials/metasurfaces, computational imaging, lasers.

Knowledge of emerging research areas and techniques, materials and structures for optics and photonics systems.

Practical knowledge of project management and practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs, or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

Additional Comments: US Citizen or permanent residency is preferred. Relocation assistance available.

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
