RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) has a newly created position of Post-Doctoral Research Engineer in Human - Machine Teaming. In this role, you will join the Autonomous and Collaborative Systems (ACS) team in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) discipline at RTRC. The team is engaged in a wide variety of research topics with applications in Robotics, Commercial Aviation, Autonomy and Human-Machine teaming.
What You Will Do: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate eager to work in a dynamic work environment on hard, cutting edge applied research problems for both RTX and government funded projects. The appointment is for one year in duration.
The responsibilities include:
- Conducting applied research in the areas of human factors, cognitive modeling, knowledge representation, automated planning and reasoning;
- Designing and developing human subject experiments, refining research methodology, constructing databases, providing coding and statistical expertise, interpreting results to answer study questions, developing statistical plans for research protocols and proposals;
- Leading and supporting externally and internally sponsored programs, writing external and internal research proposals;
- Building relationships to support partnership with leading, worldwide institutions (university, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations) to meet organizational objectives;
- Disseminating research results through reports, conference proceedings, presentations, and technical papers for archival journals.
The preferred candidate will have a strong understanding of science and engineering principles and a record of innovation as evidenced by patent applications, contribution to government funded basic research programs, and/or high-quality journal and conference publications in Human Factors, Cognitive Science, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, IEEE International Conference on Robot and human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN), ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), Robotics: Science and Systems (RSS), IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems, or other top tier research venues.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Strong background and understanding of empirically grounded theories and models of human cognition and computational architectures that attain human-level intelligence and applications of artificial intelligence techniques to autonomous systems, including 3+years' experience in:
- Required: B.Sc. in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors, or a related field (Statistics, Applied Math) with 5 years of experience.
- Conducting research and development with human factors;
- Planning and knowledge representation tools and methods - PDDL, HTN, Domain dependent heuristic search approaches;
- Scripting languages, including Python and R, SPSS, and/or using packages used in machine learning applications or advanced data analytics;
- Scientific programming in python.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors, or a related field (Statistics, Applied Math).
- Prior experience with advanced topics like epistemic reasoning, structured equation modelling, theory of mind, Bayesian approaches, causal inference; Programming: PyTorch/TensorFlow, C++, Julia, Java, ROS.
- US Citizen or Green Card holder preferred

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
