The following position is to join our RTX Research Center team:
This Associate Director Research Engineer position on the new Mission Engineering Team will be an opportunity for a skilled individual to grow new capabilities for RTX, pairing existing and future systems exploration capabilities with new and novel ways to evaluate mission/operational scenarios in unique and efficient ways. The ideal candidate will bring with them an expert knowledge of mission planning at multiple levels of command & control (C2) and is excited by a new and challenging opportunity to learn our unique product engineering tools and help to adapt them to create radical new approaches for the engineering and planning of missions. The ideal candidate will also be well-connected within the DoD community and their needs that remain unmet by the mission engineering tools of today. The ideal candidate will embrace unique and novel approaches that enable Mission Engineering at scale and across our product domains, and be willing to think differently to the status quo.
What You Will Do:
- Integration of technical systems and operations,
- Demonstrating new mission engineering capabilities to internal and external customer,
- Seeding new mission engineering research topics and identifying internal and external funding opportunities,
- Working closely with RTX business unit counterparts to demonstrate and transition new methods for mission engineering and operations,
- Exploration and optimization methods for large design spaces across aerospace and defense system domains,
- Advanced AI approaches to playing what-if scenarios and evaluating risks and uncertainties,
- PIML surrogate models, rule-based AI-model training, and LLM-based code generation from missions/operations-specific language,
- Collaboration across many engineering disciplines,
- and much more!
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Bachelor's degree (e.g. B.S., B.A.) in a relevant discipline such as criminal justice, security, engineering, mathematics, or computer science.
- 10+ years of post-undergraduate experience.
- 5+ years of experience as an Operations Research Analyst or otherwise performing mission planning or operations analysis at multiple levels.
- Knowledge of wargaming and Operations Analysis (OA) simulation tools and results to support mission engineering in military theaters.
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Knowledge of military Command & Control (C2) structure, resources at different C2 levels (platforms, munitions, weapons, etc.), and overall military doctrine and understanding of the priorities and unmet needs of DoD Commanders due to current capabilities of Mission Engineering methods and tools with a DoD Secret Clearance or higher.
- Ph.D. in a relevant discipline such as criminal justice, security, engineering, mathematics, or computer science and with a demonstrated experience in developing a research agenda and presenting research results.
- Experience developing OA simulation tools or other simulation software and experience with systems of systems analysis, multi-disciplinary modeling, and uncertainty quantification with the adaptability and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners including collaborators and funding agencies in the Mission Engineering domain with eople-management experience with technical teams of at least 5 staff and a demonstrated experience to manage uncertain requirements, formulate a problem from ill-defined needs, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed.
- Experience developing externally funded programs in the domain of Mission Engineering and a knowledge of and experience with DevOps and software development best practices.
- Requires expert knowledge of multiple work areas typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
- Expert knowledge of market with the ability to identify best practices and how to best utilize within RTX.

The salary range for this role is 143,000 USD - 287,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
