We are looking for a research engineering associate director to join the leadership team of our Avionics Future Flight Sandbox organization. The Future Flight Sandbox is tasked with defining the future flight deck and autonomous aircraft concepts and technology that will carry our business through the coming decades. The Sandbox is a small hand selected, high performance research team.
This position is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Relocation assistance may be available.

This Leader Is Expected To:
- Lead the Autonomy team - Contributing technically, setting direction, and overseeing execution.
- Align and develop roadmaps and execute research programs in the autonomy space.
- Oversee the development of our autonomy integration rig and test aircraft capabilities.
- Maintain a world class team of individual contributors.
- Build powerful networks with customers, product line transition organizations, and regulators.
What You Will Do:
- Engage as a technologist, technical contributor with the engineering team, and as a technical representative and advocate to the broader Avionics organization.
- Engage with the Advanced Technology leadership, VP of Avionics Engineering, Technical Fellows, and Product teams to understand current pain points in the B&RA and COMAV domains as well as the future technology needs.
- Define the technical and investment plan to attack biggest impact challenge problems for Future Flight Autonomy scope.
- Build world class team to address the Avionics Autonomy challenges, by experimenting, working proof of concept, building out rigs, modeling, and flight testing.
- Work with team to explore a broad disruptive trade space.
- Drive team with focus ranging from early minimum viable prototypes to scalable high fidelity evaluations as concepts mature towards transition.
- Collaborate with product design teams in both the B&RA, COMAV space as well as with teams developing new applications (such as connected flight deck, next gen FMS).
Education and Experience You Must Have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) 12 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 10 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 16 years of relevant experience.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
- Research and development experience is required.
- Proven project execution skills in developing commercial or military Avionics systems are required.
- Demonstrated engineering technical experience on complex avionics programs is required.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Experience with commercial Flight Decks and integrated avionics systems.
- History of subject matter expertise technical depth in flight decks and aircraft operations as well as technology management.

The salary range for this role is 143,000 USD - 287,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
