Position Summary:

The Director, Government Relations Alaska is the primary interface between the company and local and regional legislative leaders and bureaucratic bodies on laws, regulations, and sundry issues affecting the business within Alaska. The Director, Government Relations Alaska ethically involves themselves in all levels of the public process on issues of company importance to protect and propagate the company's good name and business interests. On the company's behalf they build a reservoir of support to effectuate positive outcomes to public issues from stakeholder groups from within and without the company. They represent and promote the company at government and public functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- An intimate knowledge of political issues and trends that may have immediate or future positive and/or negative impacts on the company.
- Analyze public policy issues and trends to determine potential impacts to the company.
- Must develop and maintain positive, professional and ethical relationships with Alaska Native Corporations, political and appointed local, state, and federal leaders.
- Develop working relationships with Alaska Native Corporations, Governors, Legislators, Assembly and City Council members, and their bureaucracies.
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies to bring desired results in the public decision-making process.
- Much of the advocacy work includes substantial involvement with the various cruise industry trade associations the company belongs to.
- Serve on the CLIA Pacific Northwest Operations and Technical Committee.
- Must effectively articulate and communicate company positions and goals to political leaders and decision makers on public issues.
- Oral and written communication skills must be highly developed.
- Work with company and industry colleagues on development (at times of a highly technical nature) of solutions to public issues and concerns.
- Plan and implement government relations budget and expenditures, making the most of charitable contributions, chamber of commerce memberships, tourism industry associations, and non-governmental organizations to leverage the good company name and to foster positive political outcomes
- Assist the company in crisis management of issues that have may have governmental involvement implications.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- At least ten years of experience in the cruise industry, government relations, public relations, or similar fields.
- A progressive job history that demonstrates attainment of higher levels of responsibility in business management, government relations, or public relations at the Manager level or above.
- Must be proficient in English.
- An excellent understanding of the political process at the local, state, and federal levels. This includes understand the mechanics of how the legislative process works both in the United States and Canada in the assigned region.
- Skilled at interpreting potential business impacts to the company based on outside public issues and policy information inputs.
- Skilled in both oral and written communication in public setting such as legislative hearings and public forums.
- High level of reading and comprehension skills, particularly as it relates to public documents such as legislation, resolutions, and reports on public issues.
- Computer literate as most public document and communications with government entities are web based.
- Skilled at relationship building.
- Skilled at building consensus for support on public issues both from within and outside the company.
- High level of listening skills.
- Capable of analyzing complex issues, particularly as it relates to public policy influence on the company and cruise industry.
- Maintaining attention to detail and staying focused on achieving goals is crucial. It's important to remain calm and composed, as resolving public policy issues can take years to reach a satisfactory conclusion,
- Trustworthy, honest and ethical behavior during all interactions with public policy makers is a must.
