Royal Caribbean Group's Newbuild Purchasing Team has an exciting career opportunity for a full time Director, Dry Dock Procurement reporting to the AVP, Newbuild & Fleet Modernization Procurement Excellence.

Position Summary:

Spearheads the strategic planning, organization, and direction of all facets of procurement for spare parts, consumables, services, and facilities project contracts in support of a global cruise ship fleet. Leverages deep knowledge of commodity markets, particularly in steel and metals, to optimize sourcing strategies and mitigate supply chain risks. Utilizes advanced statistical cost indicators to drive data-informed decision-making and achieve substantial cost savings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Strategic Leadership:
    • Develops and executes comprehensive procurement strategies, emphasizing commodity market dynamics and long-term cost optimization.
    • Oversees high-stakes negotiations and contract preparations, ensuring favorable terms and conditions.
    • Directs daily transactional operations to meet and exceed performance goals and internal client service levels.
    • Serves as a key member of the Marine Operations senior management team, contributing to overall fleet strategy and operations.
  2. Supplier Management and Market Intelligence:
    • Identifies, vets, and cultivates relationships with strategic suppliers across global markets.
    • Implements sophisticated sourcing methodologies, incorporating real-time market data and predictive analytics, particularly in volatile commodity markets like steel and metals.
    • Conducts thorough supplier selections, tenders, and cost estimations, leveraging statistical cost indicators to ensure competitive pricing and terms.
  3. Operational Excellence:
    • Ensures procurement activities align with technical, safety, environmental, and compliance requirements for day-to-day fleet operations.
    • Develops and maintains a robust contract management system, emphasizing continuous improvement in the delivery of goods and services.
    • Implements cutting-edge procurement technologies and methodologies to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
  4. Risk Management and Value Creation:
    • Designs and implements strategies to mitigate supply chain risks, with a particular focus on commodity price volatility and geopolitical factors.
    • Utilizes advanced analytics and market forecasting tools to identify cost-saving opportunities and drive value creation across the procurement function.
    • Ensures compliance with international trade regulations and corporate sustainability goals.
  5. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Leads and mentors a high-performing team of buyers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
    • Collaborates closely with Technical Operations to deliver superior support, ensuring the highest quality technical management of the fleet.
    • Promotes cross-functional collaboration to align procurement strategies with overall business objectives.


This role reports directly to the AVP of Newbuild Procurement and requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in technical procurement, deep understanding of commodity markets, and proven expertise in utilizing statistical cost indicators to drive strategic decision-making in a complex, global environment.

  • Identifies products and services needed, develops strategies and tactics for procurement and contract transactions, and directs a staff of approximately 55 employees
  • Negotiates with outside suppliers and contractors
  • Ensures contractual integrity and compliance requirements
  • Maintains supplier performance records and develops supplier relationship strategies
  • Strategic visionary on utilization of technology as an enabler for speed, control, efficiency, and cost control
  • Develops and implements financial plans
  • Coordinates with vessels (cruise ships) and shoreside engineering to ensure that items are clearly defined, meet quality and performance requirements, and fulfillment of needs in global locations
  • Coordinates with shipyards on new vessel equipment to implement total cost of ownership strategies
  • Overall responsibility for Purchasing and Cost Estimating activities across the technical supplies and services
  • Create and implement best practice purchasing vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve business performance
  • Negotiate contract terms with key suppliers to ensure value for money, quality standards and delivery terms with technical and operational input from stakeholders (Technical Operations team)
  • Ensure that purchasing strategies and processes are in place to meet business objectives and operational needs in terms of price, quality and delivery targets: Terms and conditions, supplier selection/de-selection, evaluation and rationalization of supply chain solutions including vendor managed inventory, supplier consignments and safety stock
  • Contribute to overall business strategy and annual budget process
  • Develop an overall vendor base which creates and sustains a competitive advantage utilizing global market exploitation, leveraging spends and leveraging technologies
  • Develop, implement and maintain a supplier relationship and evaluation process to measure effective supplier performance and compliance

People Management:
  • Provide leadership to department under control. Coach, mentor and develop direct reports and manage a performing team that delivers continuous improvement, added value and cost reductions
  • Set department objectives and monitor ongoing progress and performance
  • Establish strategy and best practices for staff to ensure achievement of overall business objectives
  • Work with the Purchasing team to translate strategy into specific annual performance goals and departmental objectives including KPIs, Financial Budget and Control
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Ensure strong communication between the team and other Company departments to facilitate exchange of information and in order to implement change and improvements
  • Complete regular performance reviews, manage attendance, holidays, disciplinary issues and procedures as appropriate
  • Contribute to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the possible impact on purchasing activities

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree preferred
  • 15 years' experience in sourcing, contracting, and related fields, part of which must be in an engineering environment
  • Extraordinary communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to work in very fast-paced environment
  • Multi-cultural experience in direct work situations
  • Demonstrated and proven leadership skills
  • Contracts and contractual knowledge
  • Excellent negotiation and strategy development skills
  • Proven teamwork skills, including ability to influence decisions without directing
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Demonstrated technology utilization and deployment
  • Ability to travel for as much as 25% of the time
