Our editorial team is growing and we are looking for a Data Reporter to join us!

As part of the team, you’ll be on the pulse of the daily US & UK news cycles. You'll work closely with editors and writers to pitch, develop, and refine stand-out stories and data visualizations, as well as launch new products like newsletters.

You’ll report directly to Chartr’s founder and editor. You’ll be a critical hire in the growing Sherwood editorial team based in London, learning about our processes and tools to create exceptional data-driven stories. Examples of Chartr’s content can be found here.

The role is located in the office location(s) listed on this job description which will align with our in-office working environment. Please connect with your recruiter for more information regarding our in-office philosophy and expectations.

What you’ll do

  • Source and generate data-driven story ideas based on the current news cycle.
  • Write and edit short (150-300 word) stories based on these topics and create beautiful accompanying charts and visuals, often multiple in a day.
  • Create longer, feature-length articles that dive into one topic.
  • Maintain the voice, tone, and rigorous visual standards of our content.
  • Write across Chartr / Sherwood’s growing stable of newsletters and editorial products.
  • Review, proof, and provide feedback to the wider team in our editing process.
  • Develop and pioneer new data visualization formats for general consumption.
  • Collaborate with the wider Sherwood Media editorial team and leadership on new themes, format, and product ideas.
  • Help ensure our news products span a balance of perspectives and topics, and uphold Sherwood’s editorial and ethics standards.

What you bring

  • The right to live and work in the United Kingdom, with a willingness to relocate to London.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in a newsroom setting.
  • An avid interest in the intersection of business, technology, markets, entertainment and society, reading news and analysis on these topics daily.
  • A tendency to be the person to Google a fact when in conversation.
  • Quick. Clear. Engaging. You’re able to break down complex concepts and make them easy to understand and digestible for a broad audience.
  • Knowledge of key editorial players in the publishing landscape.
  • A demonstrated passion for telling, or consuming stories with data.
  • You’re not satisfied with a summary — you can find "the story within a story" and connect events to the bigger picture.
  • Enthusiasm and energy required to handle daily deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, even under time pressure.
  • Proficiency with, or a strong desire to become proficient with, data and visualization tools.
