Description

Interpretation of one language with translation, or interpretation of two languages or dialects with or without translation in one language.

Provides accurate and impartial on-site spoken language interpretation services requiring advanced proficiency in oral and written English and one foreign language or language dialect with preference for native or near native fluency in the language of interpreting. Fluent English pronunciation is required. Professional level medical interpreting and knowledge of medical vocabulary to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and SMC medical personnel to ensure linguistically appropriate care. Acts as a cultural broker and patient advocate as directed in addition to assisting LEP patients to access a full range of Swedish services. Informs providers and patients of relevant cultural issues to assist in delivering culturally competent care. Language services include spoken language interpretation (in person, telephone or VRI [video remote interpretation]), sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, translation of written material and peer review of translation projects as needed. Maintains and updates personal calendar of assignments through computer and Smartphone in a timely manner and places patient reminder calls and assists with rescheduling and canceling patient appointments as needed. Communicates potential interpretation issues/concerns to provider(s) and Manager. Seeks evaluation, certification and additional training in interpreting, health care practices and beliefs, and cultural competency.

Abides by organization and department standards as well as the National Code of Ethics for Interpreting in Healthcare. Understands and abides by hospital policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non-discrimination and by interpreter code of ethics and standards of practice.

Keeps accurate statistical and program data of encounters by documenting in Excel and Outlook. Accepts and processes assignments for his/her language, following office protocol, logging information properly, contacting patients and informing the scheduling department of any relevant changes in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications:

  • Upon hire: National Certified Medical Interpreter - National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters or Washington Social Services Interpreter - Washington State Department of Social and Health Services
  • 1 year Interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting
  • 2 years experience in translation of English and source language; Must pass a competency exam and skills assessment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Continuing education and/or training preferred in medical interpretation competencies, translation and medical terminology/phrases.
  • Professional training in translation or equivalent experience
  • Training and education in translation competencies
  • Upon hire: ATA certification or DSHS Translator Certification
  • 3 years Interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting
  • Prior video interpreting experience
