The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU), is now recognized by our dedicated staff as a vibrant and dynamic unit that offers a unique blend of patient care experiences. The CDU is strategically divided into four distinct zones, essentially functioning as four units in one. These zones include:

- Cardiac and Neuro Stepdown : This area provides specialized care for patients recovering from cardiac events, such as post-cardiac catheterizations and those requiring cardiac drips, as well as patients with neurological conditions who need close monitoring.
- Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg) : This zone caters to a wide variety of medical and surgical patients, offering a diverse array of clinical experiences and opportunities for skill development in general patient care.
- Medical/Telemetry (Med/Tele) : In this section, patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring are treated. This includes those with chronic conditions and those recovering from acute medical events that necessitate close observation.
- Observation : This area is designated for patients admitted from the Emergency Department for 24-hour observation or further evaluation to determine the need for full admission. This zone operates with a high patient turnover, ensuring a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Staffing and Patient Ratios
- The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, with Observation occasionally extending to 1:5 depending on patient acuity.
- The unit is supported by three Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) who provide essential patient care and assistance.
Unit Culture and Environment The CDU is characterized by a fast-paced, high-energy environment that demands adaptability and efficiency from its staff. Despite the demanding nature of the unit, the culture among the staff is described as having a true family vibe, fostering a supportive and collaborative atmosphere where teamwork is paramount.
Unique Opportunities The hybrid nature of the CDU offers nurses a unique opportunity to gain experience across various specialties within one unit. With its larger capacity of approximately 50 beds, compared to our standard Med/Surg floors with just under 30 beds, the MACU provides an excellent setting for nurses to encounter and manage a broad spectrum of patient populations. The frequent admits and discharges contribute to a dynamic workflow, presenting continuous learning opportunities and professional growth.

Required qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
- Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License
- Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association
- 1 year of Nursing experience.
Preferred qualifications
- Upon hire: National Certification in area of specialty
