About Us

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. PCORI is committed to continually seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders to guide its work.

Position Summary

As Program Officer, Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), you will play a central role in the program's funding initiatives and other activities. Your primary focus will be overseeing the funding of implementation projects aimed at putting high-quality evidence into practice to improve health care and health outcomes and monitoring and supporting the successful completion of these projects. This includes critically assessing letters of intent and applications outlining proposed implementation strategies and plans, assessing program evaluation plans to ensure the results will be meaningful, and interacting with funded teams throughout their projects.

You will also support the D&I Program Team by developing well-written briefing and presentation materials and providing strategic input on initiatives. Reporting to the D&I Associate Director, you will work closely with the team at all levels and collaborate with departments across PCORI.

It often takes years for new evidence from clinical research to influence health care. Many times, these findings never reach patients and families who could benefit from the information. PCORI is the leading funder of patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research in the US-a driving force in ensuring clinical research provides more actionable information to patients. The D&I Program promotes the awareness, uptake, and integration of evidence from PCORI-funded studies into real-world practice.

Your ability to communicate effectively and manage a complex portfolio with a high level of initiative and precision will be essential for success in this role. The right candidate has a deep understanding of how US healthcare systems work, can critically evaluate research findings, connects the broader context and implications of the work while keeping track of small details, and shares our commitment to ensuring the results of research bring real benefits to patients.

Incumbent(s) in this position may be required to perform other duties and special assignments not specifically stated above.

Statements outlined in this section are designated as essential job functions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Required Skills

We are a responsive, energetic, and fast-moving team and provide robust support and mentorship to help you quickly build knowledge and transition to working independently. Within the first year, you will:

  • Review and evaluate D&I Program applicants' project concepts and proposals, providing detailed feedback to applicants informed by D&I Program experience with implementation efforts taking place in healthcare delivery settings and consistent with program funding priorities.
  • Develop cogent briefing materials, presentations, and other materials for PCORI Committees and the Board of Governors that identify, highlight, and clearly articulate important project features, as well as summarize program recommendations to support PCORI approval processes. Conceptualize presentations based on understanding the audience's interests and larger context. Synthesize information to focus on the essence of an issue.
  • Oversee projects funded through PCORI's D&I funding initiatives. Maintain regular communication with awardee teams. Identify emerging concerns and work with awardees to address them; develop mitigation strategies to address concerns when needed. Review awardees' reports and deliverables to ensure clarity and completeness.
  • Oversee or contribute to efforts to refine and improve current initiatives and to conceptualize and operationalize new ones. This may include drafting concepts and responding to feedback, conducting background research, summarizing relevant evidence, updating current program materials, or drafting materials to support funding opportunities.

Required Experience

  • Doctoral degree preferred in a field relevant to patient-centered outcomes research (e.g., health services research, public health, health policy, sociology, psychology, program evaluation) plus a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience OR a master's degree in relevant field plus minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience demonstrating increasing responsibility.
  • Professional experience in healthcare delivery settings is desirable. Professional experience in program evaluation or related quantitative analysis is also desirable.
  • A high level of expertise in writing, information analysis, and problem-solving. PowerPoint competence is preferred; oral presentation skills (or a willingness to learn) are also desirable.
  • Experience handling and managing multiple priorities effectively; experience in work environments that require organizing time efficiently and having a high tolerance for change.
  • Familiarity with the healthcare delivery system and the roles of various stakeholders. Broad familiarity with-and interest in-diverse areas of health services and/or medical research. Familiarity with comparative effectiveness research; ability to critically review journal publications reporting results from PCORI-funded and related studies.
  • Ability to work with a high level of independence and to take initiative in completing tasks and projects. Ability to identify external resources as well as internal PCORI resources to support learning and draw on these resources to accomplish goals.
  • Ability to stay abreast of Implementation Science and D&I best practices literature and incorporate relevant concepts into program initiatives and communications. Background or experience relevant to implementation is desirable; strong commitment to the goals of the program, interest, and initiative to learn are required.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; collegial, energetic, and able to develop productive relationships with colleagues, awardees, consultants, and others who contribute to program development and management.
