The Northrop Grumman Microelectronics Design & Applications (MDA) business area is leading efforts to transform computing, combining the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop revolutionary energy-efficient computing systems. You will work in a fast-paced team environment alongside a broad array of and engineers to make these next generation processing solutions a reality.
We are seeking managers with thermal/mechanical experience to support our growing thermal engineering team in support of the MDA business area.
What You'll Get To Do:
This is a dual-role technical manager position including people management and direct program leadership contribution. The split between program and functional duties will be approximately 80% program and 20% functional, on average. The direct program work may include technical work, IPT leadership, or any other appropriate technical contribution.
Key roles and responsibilities include:
Support a team of 6-10 technical staff in management role. Administrative management responsibilities include staffing, performance and compensation management, and career development.
* Execute in a technical thermal engineering role in support of MDA programs.
* Partner with program management office to ensure successful execution against cost and schedule targets.
* Providing technical leadership to the team and ensuring proper engineering processes and procedures are followed.
* Work with peers and training leads to identify critical skill shortfalls; develop appropriate technical training; and improve team performance.
This position requires work on site at Northrop Grumman's Baltimore, MD area facilities in Linthicum or Annapolis Junction, MD.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics or related field specializing in thermodynamics and heat transfer with 5+ years of experience (or Master of Science degree with 3+ years of experience).
* Working knowledge of thermal analysis software (COMSOL, IcePak, Sinda/Fluint, etc.).
* Experience with and proficiency in:
Problem solving and analytical skills
* Heat transfer and thermodynamics
* Experimental design
* Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing.
* Ability to adjust to changing priorities and requirements.
* Strong leadership qualities, including excellent communication and collaboration, team engagement, and organizational skills.
* Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) security clearance with polygraph (US Citizenship is a requirement for this).
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Physics.
* 9 years of experience in a multi-disciplined science/engineering environment.
* Design and analysis experience simulating heat transfer within superconducting circuitry.
* Working knowledge of cryogenic test systems; dilution refrigeration, 4 K cryo-coolers, Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigeration (ADR) and liquid helium immersion.
* Experience in nanoscale heat transfer
* Experience in cryogenic system design and analysis
* Design and analysis experience simulating heat transfer within superconducting materials
* Experience in 3D modeling of mechanical structures in SolidWorks, NX or similar.
* Demonstrated success leading high performance teams as technical, integrated product team, and/or functional leader.
* Experience with Lean-Agile development for modeling and/or hardware systems.
* Experience leading teams in a functional, programmatic, or technical capacity.
* Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.

Salary Range: *$120,800 - $181,200
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
