Job Description Summary

As a Claims Director, you'll manager team of reinsurance claim professionals with accountability to investigate, evaluate and resolve complex assumed or ceded reinsurance claims, lawsuits or arbitrations of the most severe risk/value to the organization. You'll be responsible for the control of all claims functions and personnel within a given line of business (commercial casualty, property, workers comp, etc.) type of business (treaty, facultative) or claim specialty (asbestos, toxic tort, pollution, E&O and D&O), to ensure favorable settlements of pending claims.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Manages assumed or ceded claims of high complexity or from high priority customers/ceding companies
Serves as company representative or fact witness at dispositions and/or mediations, litigation/arbitration proceedings arising from coverage determinations. Manages litigation where appropriate.
Maintains contact with external customers that involves developing and influencing brokers or key individuals.
Partners with industry leaders to help promote positive industry and legislative changes.
Delivers an outstanding customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.
Resolves customer complaints and monitors customer satisfaction in an effort to drive action plans for improvement.
Manages the audits of ceding companies as appropriate
Identifies, develops and retains high potential associates who have the potential for or are ready to fill critical roles in the organization.
Creates a working environment that fosters the achievement of the highest level of technical competency and professionalism with staff. Ensures tactical planning, annual budget preparation and monitoring, projecting human resources and customer needs.
Directs associate management, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Claims AVP. Leads a team of Reinsurance Claims professionals.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree in related field preferred. Post-graduate studies (MBA, JD) desired.
License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Relevant professional designations or certifications desirable (CPCU, ARe , etc.)
Experience: Ten years of reinsurance claims experience, including a minimum of two years in a claims management/leadership role preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven in-depth experience handling and/or managing high severity and/or complex claims and litigation is required. Multi-line, multi-jurisdictional, excess and specialty or other specialty experience is desired. Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Proven ability to effectively communicate interpersonally with individuals and groups. Advanced communication skills necessary for customer contact, negotiation, presentations, project management, personnel management, technical and non-technical contacts. This position may require specific or advanced skill/knowledge in insurance lines or exposures such as asbestos, toxic torts, pollution, E&O, D&O, etc. as well as a solid understanding of tort law.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, proficiencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the business unit executive and Human Resources.

Job Conditions:
Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Must be able participate in on-site audits of ceding companies, for the purpose of inspecting their files and records. Ability to travel with overnight stays required.
