Job Description Summary
The Excess Surplus (E&S) Claims team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide. Many have complicated risks and loss history, requiring us to be adaptable and resilient in our work to help customers. As a Claims Specialist, you'll investigate, evaluate, negotiate and resolve property damage claims of moderate severity and complexity. It will be important to manage the work and performance of vendors to achieve successful resolution of claims. We'll count on you to build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers, meeting their needs and expectations.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Handles claims in compliance with company quality standards, including some which may involve litigation. These claims may include first and third-party claims of moderate severity and complexity/exposure level.
Manages the work and performance of vendors to successfully resolve claims.
Builds and maintains strong working relationships with insureds to gather and share pertinent information.
Provides timely and appropriate evaluation of claims to identify and manage reserves according to company standards.
Maintains current knowledge of all insurance lines, court decisions which may impact the claim function, current guidelines in the claim function and policy changes and modifications. This may require attending various seminars and training sessions.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to E&S/Specialty Claims Manager.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree preferred. Additional education in a particular line of business may be required by the hiring business unit. Insurance coursework preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Associates must acquire the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to acquire required licenses/registrations within the designated time period, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.
Experience: Two to three years property claims handling experience or comparable job related experience or education preferred. Commercial claims property experience preferred. Prior multi-jurisdictional, E&S or other specialty lines experience preferred. Familiarity with various types of insurance policies preferred. Specific experience in a particular line of business may be required by the hiring business unit.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of commercial insurance and E&S or other specialty insurance. Familiarity with various types of insurance policies and property damage estimating. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups, by phone and in writing. Ability to build and maintain open and trusting working relationships with insureds in order to gather pertinent information. Ability to effectively manage conflict and practices attentive and active listening. Ability to analyze facts and coverages in order to evaluate damages. Ability to work with and coordinate independent adjusters and attorneys in claims and litigation management.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Director and HR Business Partner.
