As a Director, you'll lead and manage Middle Market staff operations for underwriting practice, e.g. general industries, construction and specialty care. We'll count on you to develop and recommend underwriting or product policies, procedures and standards and ensure coordination between Middle Market staff and field operations.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Leads the development of strategy and direction for assigned practice(s). Leads key initiatives to address underwriting and profitability objectives. Reinforces understanding, communication and execution of underwriting strategy.
Develops and implements optimum book/portfolio management to maximize profitability and production with team.
Monitors competitive landscape for practice and recommends product and pricing changes. Proactively identifies market trends, publishing insights and understanding of market dynamics for assigned practice.
Provides technical assistance and support to field team and service/value partners, including over authority support/referrals. Maintains relationships with new entities, access points and distribution channels that need the support and expertise of Middle Market staff operations.
Sets and coordinates levels of authority for assigned practice(s).
Leads various support functions such as training, associate career improvement, systems and acts as a liaison to other business units, e.g., Nationwide Technology, Business Insights, Services, Claims, Loss Control, Marketing, etc.
Manges projects and profitability initiatives.
Collaborates and works closely with the Commercial Lines Product and Performance team.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President, Middle Market Staff Underwriting; may be responsible for approximately four to eight direct reports.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in business, or other related subject area, plus advanced studies preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: CPCU, ARM or other industry designation preferred or equivalent.
Experience: Typically, 10 or more years of commercial lines underwriting experience, including at least five years of Middle Market experience in area of specialty preferred, minimum of three to five years of management experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong underwriting, insurance industry and overall business acuity. Exposure to field and staff functions preferred, with multi-line experience or strong concentration in lines related to specialty practice. Demonstrated problem solving, decision-making and strategic abilities. Ability to get results, deal with ambiguity, communicate with upper management and conceptualize strategic objectives. Detailed knowledge of product/forms, underwriting policies/procedures and standard methodologies. Strong communication, collaboration and influencing skills to effectively interact with all levels of the field team, including upper management. Ability to manage the mission and purpose and to lead and direct staff, committees and project participants in all aspects of underwriting activities. Self-starter with a drive for results. Organizational agility and negotiation are also essential.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
