As a Consultant, you'll provide the highest level of technical expertise to policyholders, Underwriting, Claims, Sales and others. You'll develop and improve loss control and risk management policies, practices and new products to support personal lines insurance. You'll consult with policyholders and external vendors and may work from a home office.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research and loss analysis to identify and analyze properties, activities or regional factors that present the greatest possibility of loss in a given territory or specific property. Compiles, analyzes and interprets statistical data and underwriting information to mitigate the client’s exposures. Conducts investigations into causes of losses.

  • Visits existing or prospective customers and evaluates property. Discusses relevant information to fully understand the account. Performs site survey to evaluate risks and recommends solutions and services that will support the policyholder in reducing or preventing future losses.

  • Conducts, when required, surveys for large or unique exposures; coordinates prospect survey activity for multi-location accounts.

  • Uncovers exposure or coverage concerns that can be addressed through the agent and the Underwriting team. Provides risk assessment and recommendations about risk selection to Underwriting for evaluation and pricing.

  • Builds comprehensive written survey reports and recommendations that address hazards and controls associated with property. May also conduct surveys of risks outside assigned territories.

  • Maintains open and ongoing communications with customers, Claims and Underwriting management. Identifies hazards, exposures and other potential loss-causing activities.

  • Provides technical training and consulting to policyholder, Underwriting staff, agents, Claims, etc. to help mitigate risks, reinforce standards and practices and educate on loss reduction issues. Serves as technical resource on construction methods, building codes, regulatory issues and other matters which may affect insurance coverage or indemnity.

  • Helps develop specialized education programs and training materials for safety, building design and construction, protection systems, etc. Plans and conducts training of field staff if required. Evaluates progress and modifies training programs as needed. 

  • Helps with sales efforts for large or impactful prospective customers by communicating or coordinating the presentation of information on available risk management services. 

  • Influences the profitability of the organization through risk management services based on analysis of each property and professional judgment (according to best practices) to help reduce loss ratios and loss frequency or other appropriate improvement measures.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager or Director; individual contributor

Typical Skills and Experiences: 


Education: Bachelor's degree in insurance, business administration, economics/finance, risk management or engineering preferred.

Experience: Typically, 10 years of experience with personal lines insurance underwriting, property claims, loss control, building evaluation, residential appraisal or risk management preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: : Attainment of Certified Safety Professional, Associate of Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional or Associate in Risk Management desired. Holds licenses/certifications as required by state laws and regulations.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills : Proven knowledge of building construction and repair methods, risk management policies, practices and procedures, insurance coverage and underwriting, claims and related issues. Strong relationship building, marketing and consulting skills required to interact with underwriting, agents, policyholders and vendors. 

Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to operate a personal computer and other business equipment, prioritize work, and meet deadlines. Strong time management skills and ability to work independently to manage work volume while meeting productivity goals and metrics with high quality. 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. 

Staffing exception to the above must be approved by hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

Job Conditions:


Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (exempt).

Working Conditions: Must be able to conduct physical surveys. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., climb, stoop, bend, balance on various heights and crawl. May require frequent and overnight travel. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards.
