Job Description Summary

Our team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide. Do you have deep insurance industry knowledge, good negotiation skills and understand litigation? If you like variety in your work, have desire to collaborate and bring fair resolution to sophisticated specialty claims, we want to hear from you!

As a Claims Specialist, we'll count on you to investigate and maintain specialty claims-asbestos, toxic tort, sexual molestation and/or pollution-of low to moderate complexity. We'll count on you to handle claims within prescribed authority, adhering to best claims practices.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handles claims and makes decisions within delegated claims settlement and authority.

  • Conducts liability and damage investigations of reported claims. Organizes account folder according to guidelines.

  • Determines accurate policy coverages and applies claims practices to conclude assigned cases in accordance with company guidelines.

  • Brings files to closure, either by voluntary dismissals or by negotiation of settlements.

  • Determines amount of appropriate settlements or grounds for denial. Assists in the drafting of settlement documents.

  • Assists in negotiating cost sharing agreements between other insurance carriers and policyholders.

  • Submits severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information to home office, claims management, and underwriting.

  • Partners with Special Investigation Unit and National Recovery to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.

  • Maintains current knowledge of insurance and applicable product/services, court decisions which may affect the claims function current guidelines in the claims function and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars and/or training sessions.

  • Promotes and provides an outstanding customer service experience to internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers. 

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Claims Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:


Education: Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Studies toward professional designations, such as AIC, ARE, CPCU, IIA, and/or AEI preferred.

Experience: One to three years of property/casualty claims experience desired. Prefer some exposure to asbestos, environmental and/or commercial claims processes.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: General knowledge of property casualty and/or life/health underwriting practices and policies/policy content. General knowledge of technical nomenclature and various state regulations. General knowledge of regulatory and legal issues in claims. Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Advanced verbal and written communication skills for interaction with technical specialists, insureds, federal agencies, legal professionals and other insurance companies. 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. 

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Job Conditions:

Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Must be able to make physical inspection of loss sites, work irregular hours and travel with possible overnight requirements.
