We're seeking someone to join our Enterprise Technology Services team as a Vice President in Architecture & Modernization as an Applied AI Research Engineer.
Division
Enterprise Technology & Services (ETS) delivers shared technology services for Morgan Stanley supporting all business applications and end users. ETS provides capabilities for all stages of Morgan Stanley's software development lifecycle, enabling productive coding, functional and integration testing, application releases, and ongoing monitoring and support for over 3,000 production applications. ETS also delivers all workplace technologies (desktop, mobile, voice, video, productivity, intranet/internet) in integrated configurations that boost the personal productivity of employees. Application and end user functions are delivered on a scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure composed of seamlessly integrated datacenter, network, compute, cloud, storage, and database functions.

About role:
Morgan Stanley has been at the forefront of the AI journey with applications such as Genome and AI@MS Assistant that use AI to provide better, personalized advice to our clients. Generative AI provides unique opportunities to provide new capabilities to the firm's internal users as well as our clients. This role is for an applied AI Research engineer who will help with deep expertise on AI models, benchmarking & evaluation, advanced usage patterns, domain-adaptation, optimization and contribute towards firmwide AI Development Platform that will aid the adoption of AI capabilities throughout the enterprise. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience and drive towards understanding, experimenting and adapting leading research work on AI approaches for organization's prioritized AI challenges esp. in the generative AI domain. The candidate will have a strong passion for using AI to increase productivity as well as help generate new ideas for product improvements. This role requires a strong knowledge and experience on deep learning, contemporary model architectures and a strong drive to solve real-world problems with AI techniques. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate deep AI technology expertise with a track record of developing, adapting and optimizing AI models.
What you'll do in the role:
- Benchmarking of different open/closed AI models for different AI tasks.
- Study and experiment with top research papers and associated code for different AI tasks e.g. ASR, TTS, NER, embedding generation, SLMs, VLM, tools usage, planning, orchestration, guardrails, evaluation, etc.
- Develop prototype to demonstrate model capabilities, advanced usage patterns.
- Fine-tune smaller models for benchmarking on specific domains and evaluation.
- Collaborate with AI engineers to bring potential work to the platform.
What you'll bring to the role:
- Strong hands-on proficiency in Python and machine learning specific libraries like numpy, opencv, scikit-learn, pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, etc.
- Strong expertise in deep learning, its mathematical foundations, frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Hands-on understanding of transfer learning, fine-tuning of deep learning models esp. contemporary language models, speech processing models, retrieval models, etc.
- Experience with NLP and basic understanding of other AI domains like computer vision, Speech processing, reinforcement learning, etc.
- Understanding of AI/ML Lifecycle and basic understanding of systems like mlflow, Dataiku, databricks.
- Strong desire and ability to influence development teams and help them adopt AI
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a global organization and across time zones
