Product Design Engineer (Soft Goods)

The Soft Goods Engineering team develops and integrates technical soft goods solutions across all of Meta's consumer AR, VR, Wearables and Accessories product lines. We work closely with a wide array of creative, technical and operations partners as we push the boundaries of what is possible.As a member of our team, you will take the lead in exploring and refining your designs through iterative prototyping, while working with talented engineers, designers and manufacturers. You will refine selected designs and coordinate with manufacturing experts during the production process.

Product Design Engineer (Soft Goods) Responsibilities:

  • Provide onsite tech support for soft-goods suppliers and bring up the supplier capability for Meta projects.
  • Drive the Design for Manufacturability (DFM) from suppliers. Review DFM and highlight the design related items to the Product Design leads. Suggest the soft goods process or solutions to achieve the design specifications, quality and cost targets.
  • Develop the Soft Goods Product Design including: Color, Material, Finish, Industrial Design, DOE samples at our soft-goods labs or at supplier sites.
  • Provide New Product Introduction support at suppliers onsite daily through technical communication and by providing product design data, reports and samples.
  • Answer supplier's questions while onsite regarding the Product Design functions, as well as collect data and information and efficiently communicate it back to Meta's Product Design leads without delays to the sample or production plan.
  • Screen and verify information and data at supplier sites before they send information to greater project team, to increase the transparence and avoid misleading the project team.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Development Engineering, Supplier Quality Engineering and Reliability teams, to build up a robust engineering process and production line to achieve the build goals.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Test Plan (FATP) line bring up to solve the problems regarding to the soft goods products. Translate the FATP findings and issues to soft goods suppliers and ask for improvements.
  • Report supplier status and findings in the weekly meeting with US project team. Help the team understand the situation at suppliers.
  • Supplier capability and risk assessment during supplier selection.
  • Supporting station and line quality to make sure the suppliers are meeting the build plans.
  • Lead the engineering design verification and sampling during new product introduction phase. Help suppliers to improve the process limitations to meet the design specifications.
  • Confirm process readiness before production approval.
  • Drive the design and material design of experiments for design verifications.
  • Conduct engineering data reviews, and screen out the risks before shipments.
  • Improve issues highlighted or escalated from Product Design or other team members.
  • In-Mold Labeling Issue tracking and drive the improvement actions to close all the issues on schedule.
  • Soft goods material development with contract manufacturing and suppliers.
  • Reliability issues failure analysis and root cause identification.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years working experience with soft goods product development with track record of launching products successfully, or equivalent work experience.
  • Communication experience including writing clear and concise, emails, reports & documents for a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Experience with soft goods materials, like textiles, Microfiber, PU, adhesive, glue and Polycarbonate sheet material properties, demonstrated experience of material selection.
  • Experience with soft goods process flow charts and tooling design for manufacturability initiatives.
  • Experience with process selection and station parameters impact on product cosmetics and reliability.
  • Experience with soft goods material secondary process applications including: cutting, forming, bonding, lamination, gluing and Ultrasonic welding and cutting, debossing.
  • 3+ years experience with 3D Modeling on CAD software such as NX, Solidworks or Creo.
  • Experience with basic quality tool for statistic data analysis and reporting such as Minitab, JMP or equivalent software.
  • Ability to travel to and around China, 50~80% of the time to work onsite at the factories.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years working experience in soft goods product development or related industry.
  • Experience in designing and manufacturing technical soft goods and integrating them into consumer electronics products.
  • Experience with a Tier 1 supply chain in consumer electronics.
