At Meta, we are creating the next computational platforms with AR and MR. You will be responsible for designing and productizing optical systems and sub-components that are core to delivering transformative experiences in Oculus AR/MR products. You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on releasing imaging and illumination optical systems and sub-components that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing (HVM). We are seeking an optical engineer with proven experience in developing optical components and systems, in-depth skills in optical design, simulation, illumination and stray light analysis of optical systems, and capacity to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and focused on execution while providing clear and effective communication to remove barriers across teams.

Optical Engineer Responsibilities:
- Create optical systems and sub-components for our current and next-generation AR/MR products through comprehensive optical design, system modeling, and product development cycles.
- Conduct lens designs to support architectural investigations and requirement definitions for optical systems and components.
- Study the optical effects of various cover window design options for trade-off analysis based on Product Design and Industrial Design criteria.
- Conduct stray light simulations and investigate the stray light impact of cover windows on camera and depth sensor systems.
- Establish and document Engineering Requirements Specifications for optical components such as camera lenses, depth optics, and cover windows. Devise key performance metrics and test requirements, and collaborate with the supply chain group and vendors to source quality parts.
- Perform hands-on lab work to validate that optical component and system specifications are being met, and conduct failure analysis of any issues that may arise.
- Collaborate with Reliability teams to understand the durability of optical components and systems.
- Drive the vendor for maturity in optical process, performance, yield, and ramp new optical components and systems for full mass production readiness.
- Communicate technical strategies and complex concepts with extreme clarity upwards, downwards and sideways.
- Domestic and international travels as business needs dictate.
- BS in the field of Optics, Physics or other optics-related fields. Minimum 4-5 years of experience in relevant field.
- Experience in taking optical products from concept phase to shipping phase in the consumer electronics industry (high volume products) and proven experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Knowledge and experience with optics fundamentals including imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometrical optics.
- In-depth skills in sequential and non-sequential analysis of optical systems using Zemax, CodeV, Fred or LightTools (ideally, all of them) as applicable to camera and depth sensor systems. Proven experience with specifying coatings on cover windows and other optics.
- Experience with hands-on test, prototype build, debugging, and calibration of optical systems, equipment, and instrumentation (interferometer, spectrometer, scatterometer, lab microscope, hazemeter, roughness measurement tool etc).
- Knowledge of optical materials suitable for optical cover windows and knowledge of various optical / durability coatings for world-exposed optical surfaces.
- Familiar with common optical metrologies, such as spectrometers, interferometers, BSDF and TWE tests.
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.
- Proficiency in optical design, tolerance analysis, integration, and testing.
- Optical systems analysis and modeling experience. Eg: estimating SNR in optical systems, calculating light budgets for low photon detection systems.
- Familiarity with camera sensor architectures and camera calibrations.

- Experience working with cross-functional teams to manage trade-offs and the risk portfolio at different stages of product development.
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today-beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
