As a member of the Engineering, Maintenance & Utilities (EMU) Utilities Reliability Engineering Group, the primary role of the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Building Automation System (BAS) Reliability Engineer is responsible for HVAC and BAS reliability and optimization within our Manufacturing Division, including product manufacturing, storage, laboratory, and office facilities. With our extensive range of facilities and environments our engineers have opportunities across many diverse areas including Biological, Chemical, Automation, Capital Projects, Maintenance, Safety, Process Development, Technical Services, Utilities and Qualification/Validation.

This position is a subject matter expert support role for the HVAC/BAS systems and will be involved with the utility systems troubleshooting, energy optimization, GMP facility design and application of the HVAC/BAS reliability strategy. Long range capital planning, project management and project execution for HVAC/BAS related projects will also be required. The scope of responsibilities includes Air Handling Systems, Exhaust Systems, Heat Recovery Systems, HEPA Filtration and Building Automation Systems.

This role will require skill in the areas of HVAC design oversight and application of Building Automation tools, field execution, and close collaboration with other facility groups to achieve reliability and quality/compliance performance targets.

Job technical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a technical liaison for the HEPA filtration certification program to ensure compliance with quality standards. Duties may include failure investigation, deviation support and filter certification program analysis and guidance.
  • Being a key member of the Utilities Reliability Engineering team, identifying and prioritizing tasks, assisting with system troubleshooting, identifying and executing reliability projects, as well as communicating status of projects and associated mitigating actions.
  • Evaluate systems, components and develop strategies to optimize and enhance reliability of the utility systems throughout the asset life cycle.
  • Interface with operations, maintenance and central utilities for all HVAC/BAS projects and initiatives.
  • Energy Reduction and Sustainability - Identify and execute energy and sustainability projects in support for site goals.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to Engineering, Maintenance and Utilities for HVAC and BAS systems, including preventative maintenance job plan review.
  • Perform root cause failure analysis on equipment failures and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
  • Serve as technical liaison for capital projects to ensure reliability, maintainability and operability of installed equipment, this includes interfacing with our construction contractors to ensure scope execution and completion.
  • Provide technical input to support production area quality deviation investigations.
  • Support system modifications of systems with technical assistance, change control, procedural updates and drawing updates.
  • Support periodic audits and regulatory agency inspections.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical major.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience with HVAC design, operations or HVAC system reliability.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP cleanroom environments including HEPA filtration principals and certification practices.
  • Very good general computer skills, including Microsoft programs, Word and Excel
  • Strong mechanical engineering aptitude
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • One (1) year expertise in Building Automation Systems (BAS) operations. Experience including graphical interfaces, trending and reporting of HVAC systems for related mechanical systems.
  • Experience with HVAC design principles including Thermodynamic and Psychrometric analysis as well as air and water system design principles.
  • Experience with HVAC system design or operation for cGMP regulated facilities.
  • Experience with HVAC testing, commissioning, and qualification in cGMP environments. Use of Kneat (Eval) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability professional (CMRP) or Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) Certification.
  • Computerized Management Maintenance Systems, SAP and/or ProCal.
