We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Scientist to establish and lead a creative and flexible Automation & Engineering team focused on enterprise-wide solutions at our West Point, PA research facility. The successful candidate will be a deep expert in bioengineering and laboratory automation and have a proven track record of engineering and automation solution design, solution implementation, the digitization of lab data, and training scientists to utilize newly implemented solutions. In this role you will:
- Identify new automation and engineering opportunities throughout Quantitative Biosciences and our company's Research Labs in general, with an emphasis on increasing the throughput of more translational models and deeper phenotyping for target and therapeutic discovery, and work with stakeholders to design and implement solutions.
- Deploy team members to operate and train others on solutions as needed.
- Optimize the utilization of existing automation solutions and related workflows within global Quantitative Biosciences.
- Lead and develop the team within Automation & Engineering that will execute on these efforts to maximize their impact and grow their careers.
- Maintain a strong understanding in the Bioengineering and laboratory automation fields, monitoring the landscape to assess emerging technologies and their applicability to Quantitative Biosciences and drug discovery in general.
- Participate in the yearly planning of strategic investments in new bioengineering capabilities, laboratory automation and related new technologies.
- Represent West Point Automation & Engineering on automation and engineering focused working groups at the company as needed, demonstrating leadership, and influence.
What you will need:
- An advanced degree in bioengineering, biology, pharmacology, or a related engineering discipline, and 14+ years relevant experience for a BS degree, 10+ years relevant experience for a Masters degree, or 8+ years relevant experience for a Ph.D.
- Demonstrated experience in integrated engineering and/or automation platform design for the purposes of drug discovery and development.
- The ability to design experiments, interpret and track results, and utilize this information for automated workflow development and optimization.
- An excellent track record of providing mentorship and guidance to direct reports and peers.
- The ability to communicate process, results, and progress effectively with and relate to a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, peers, direct reports, partner organizations and external collaborators.
- A robust understanding of drug discovery and clinical development.
- Experience with LabView programming and architecture and the following industry instruments: BiomekiSeries, Combi, BlueWasher, Cytomat, Precise, Staubli, Nikon, WDII, PlateLoc, Xpeel, Cytation, Pherastar, Vspin, Echo, Hamilton, HPD300, Apex.
- Working knowledge of infectious diseases, neuroscience and immunology.
- The ability to communicate effectively with and relate to a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, peers, direct reports, partner organizations and external collaborators.
