We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Associate Principal Scientist to join our Biochemistry & Mass Spectrometry team within the Mass Spectrometry & Biophysics (MSB) Department in Quantitative Biosciences. Our team utilizes multidisciplinary techniques to characterize ligand-protein interactions and modulation of (target) protein function to support early-stage drug discovery across a broad spectrum of therapeutic modalities.

Applicants will ideally have a strong background in protein mass spectrometry and prior experience in hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) or related techniques to characterize ligand-protein and protein-protein interactions. The successful candidate will be part of cross-functional teams and will collaborate across diverse therapeutic areas including Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiometabolic and Infectious Diseases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize HDX-MS and other protein footprinting techniques to characterize protein higher order structure and dynamics, as well as ligand-protein and protein-protein interactions.
  • Perform intact protein and peptide mapping experiments to identify cleavage patterns, covalent modification, PTMs and differential expression patterns.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in our Biochemistry, Biophysics, BioNMR and Protein & Structural Chemistry teams to deliver an integrated view of protein conformation and interactions.
  • Serve as a representative on cross-functional program teams with accountability for delivering progress updates, presenting data & contributing to strategic direction.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in the field of protein and biophysical mass spectrometry and drive innovation through platform development, internal/external collaboration & long-range capability planning.
  • Contribute to a high-performance culture of inclusion, collaboration, engagement and self-accountability.
  • Promote the external reputation of our department through publications and participating in external symposia.

Minimum Education Required:

  • Post-graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry, Structural Biology, Biochemistry or another related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience: Ph.D. (5+ years), M.Sc. (7+ years) or B.Sc. (13+ years).

Essential Qualifications:

  • Broad expertise in protein mass spectrometry/proteomics, including hands-on experience performing HDX-MS studies, is required.
  • Ability to independently trouble-shoot hardware and software complications and liaise directly with field service engineers to resolve issues as needed.
  • Experience performing technology evaluations & making recommendations on investments designed to maintain a leadership position in the field.
  • Demonstrated passion for fostering a diverse and inclusive culture and contributing to the growth and success of colleagues.
  • Strong external reputation as evidenced through high-impact publications, presentations, and scientific community engagement.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with a proven track-record of maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders.

Desirable Experience and Skills:

  • Prior experience with additional structural mass spectrometry techniques for characterizing ligand-protein interactions such as FPOP, photoaffinity labeling and native mass spectrometry would be a significant advantage.
  • Knowledge of structural techniques such as bioNMR, x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy is beneficial.
  • Experience with classical protein biochemistry techniques including gel electrophoresis, western blotting, enzymatic digestion, protein/peptide fractionation, SEC, DLS, etc. is advantageous.
  • Prior experience with membrane protein characterization is desirable.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Expected US salary range:
$135,500.00 - $213,400.00
