The Shared Services Organization is on a transformation journey – set out to dramatically improve its operations by adopting best practices and developing a culture of continuous improvement. Our current operating model consists of regional captive centers supported by a global Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) operation for our Finance & Accounting processes.  Becoming a world-class Shared Services Organization requires changes in our business processes and many of our existing accounting systems. To that point, we have embarked on several strategic initiatives to upgrade our systems and automate and standardize our processes.

The Opportunity: 

This role is responsible for overseeing the accounting functions for the Mattel Global Shared Services US Indirect Tax team to ensure the timely and accurate processing of sales tax, property tax, and other compliance filings. This position is responsible for verifying that tax transactions are handled in accordance with local statutory requirements, accounting industry guidelines, and accounted for based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. This role will partner with our BPO offshore team.

This position is located at our East Aurora, NY campus and sits at our East Aurora Mattel Global Shared Services center, reporting to the Sr. Manager, Mattel Global Shared Services
 

What Your Impact Will Be: 

  • Manage US indirect tax responsibilities; including sales and use tax fillings and amendments, real and business property fillings, unclaimed property and business tax registrations, renewals, and other compliance fillings
  • Understand and adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and compliance with Mattel Corporate Accounting Policies 
  • Monthly analysis of GL accounts to ensure proper accounting & accrual calculations; identify, research, & resolve unusual balances
  • Strong comprehension of accounting practices, especially related to prepaids, accruals, liabilities (and understanding normal debit/credit balances for each), plus ability to interpret unexpected swings in balances/activity
  • Evaluate off-site & internal teams’ performance & align goals & project priorities to ensure that deadlines are met, fillings are accurate, payments are submitted timely; all while minimizing audit exposure
  • Conduct tax research to assist with projects and point person for non-income tax related inquires to provide tax advice to ensure Mattel entities are compliant with most current tax rates and laws
  • Suggest solutions and preventative controls to reduce errors 
  • Lead in identifying and developing process improvements 
  • Serve as main contact and subject matter expert for US Indirect tax for Mattel’s implementation of Oracle Cloud platform
  • Support activities and projects of the wider shared services team
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with Mattel Global Shared Services Americas customers while providing high quality, efficient, and collaborative service 
     

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or related field
  • CPA is preferred
  • 6+ years’ experience in tax, accounting or related field
  • Leadership experience managing a team
  • Experience working in a Shared Services Operating model
  • Experience utilizing major tax software preferred:  Thomson Reuters, CCH, Avalara, Vertex, etc. as well as financial systems:  Oracle Financials Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system,  Hyperion Financial Management, Cognos reporting tools


The annual base salary range for this position is between $100,000 and $123,000 
**This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however annual base salary will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
