Underwriting Relationship Consultant - Disability Insurance

The Opportunity

We are looking for a candidate to fill a unique position in our Disability Insurance New Business & Underwriting department. The Underwriting Relationship Consultant (URC) is a dynamic role with primary responsibilities being to respond to inquiries and informals from field partners on potential applicants for individual disability insurance, build relationships with new and existing brokerage general agencies (BGAs) in the third-party brokerage space, and partner with our Sales & Distribution team as a liaison with New Business & Underwriting. This role is best filled by an experienced Underwriter with a desire to support sales growth by providing tentative underwriting assessments that will drive formal applications where we are competitive while mitigating waste in non-competitive situations. The ideal candidate will possess the ability and desire to build strong relationships with our field partners and be able to thrive in an environment where each day is different and unpredictable.

The Team

We are a diverse team comprised of Underwriters, Account Managers and Case Managers supporting the growing Third-Party Brokerage (MMSD) block of business. We collaborate throughout the day to meet & exceed our service levels and quality goals all while delivering a best-in-class customer experience to the brokerage general agencies that we support.

The Impact
  • Relentless focus on building and maintaining strong partnerships with new and existing brokerage general agencies (BGAs).
  • Support onboarding new BGA relationships through education of tools & resources.
  • Demonstrate strong underwriting acumen by asking pertinent questions and providing tentative assessments, often in the absence of the full picture.
  • Ability to work independently; leveraging tools & resources such as Medical Manual, Underwriting Guide, etc.
  • Maintain a competitive sales mindset that strives to balance underwriting risk with ambitious sales goals.
  • Prioritize competing priorities and balance time effectively.
  • Exhibit a collaborative mindset when partnering with both internal and external business partners.
  • Provide technical guidance, information and procedural advice to a variety of complex, customer service issues.
  • Travel to firms and conferences as needed to share product awareness, support training, and build relationships.
  • Ability to communicate difficult decisions and negotiate with others to reach mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Display strong communication skills - both written and verbal - with the customer experience as the focus point of all interactions.
  • Identify trends around underwriting guidelines relative to the market; proactively share examples of opportunities to help drive competitiveness.
  • Possess solid working knowledge of the Company's products and services to support field education/training needs.
  • Lead and execute on medium to large scale projects and initiatives in New Business and Underwriting with minimal direction.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of Disability and/or Life Underwriting experience
  • 5+ years of customer service experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree
  • 3+ years underwriting Individual Disability Insurance applications with a signing authority at/above $10,000/monthly benefit
  • Ability to run and analyze data to identify trends and opportunities
  • Strong communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Sales mindset with desire to win business in a competitive landscape
  • Independent/critical thinking skills
  • Well-versed in customer advocacy such as demonstrating empathy and managing difficult conversations
  • Able to excel in a fast-paced environment with proficiency in multitasking and navigating multiple systems
