Job Introduction

Reporting to the Automation Manager, the incumbent is accountable for oversight of engineering projects from the initial concept phase to execution. The Project Engineer contributes to team effort by providing innovative ideas for automation equipment and processes, cost reduction and/or quality improvement measures and assisting in ensuring compliance with Health and Safety Programs and legislative requirements.

Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible to develop innovative automation solutions and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process.
  • Design and conduct research programs, applying theory and principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
  • Create new product statement of requirements documentation based on customer, management, and/or regulatory inputs
  • Complete automation feasibility review, including robotic simulations.
  • Program and test robot path-planning, including optimization studies.
  • Perform analysis of automation market segments, including competitive benchmarking studies, competitor analysis, and review of technical literature.
  • Assist in business case development and analysis for development of technical solutions.
  • Responsible for part proposal drawing process; responsible for all drawing info including tolerancing, GD&T specifications, dimensional stacks, and surface finishes.
  • Design and execute R&D projects
  • Design 3D CAD models and produce detailed engineering drawings.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols to ensure a safe environment.

Knowledge and Education

  • Master of Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of Python or C++
  • Competent working knowledge of industrial robot safety standards and the PHSR process
  • Knowledge of ANSI, SAE, QS-9000, and other industry/customer related standards
  • Knowledge of GD&T, Design for Manufacturing, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA), Dimensional Stack Analysis
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Process & Assembly methods
  • Knowledge of techniques and processes used to produce prototype components
  • Awareness of concurrent and simultaneous engineering techniques with the ability to work as part of a project team to achieve results often with short or compressed timing.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of five years of industrial experience primarily in the field of automation and robotics
  • Project management experience preferred in the field innovation and R&D
  • Experience with robot programming (ABB and/or Fanuc preferred), including path/trajectory planning with force feedback.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in 3D CAD solid modelling (CATIA, UG, or SOLIDWORKS)
  • Ability to run robotic simulation models using Robot Studio and RoboDK
  • Professional technical report writing
  • Strong English language skills, both spoken and written; other languages, especially German, desirable
  • Proficient in CAE, particularly FEA and Simulation
  • Able to create a DOE and test plan for product or process validation
  • Competent at completing tolerance stacks for complex components, assemblies, and systems
  • Computer literate and able to use MATLAB, Simulink, or other software to support project development
