Position: Director, Knowledge and Legacy

Role Overview: The Director, Knowledge and Legacy, leads a talented and dedicated team who are responsible for overseeing the accession, cataloguing, preservation, and management of valuable physical and digital records of historical materials within the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Archives (the LCPA Archives). This position also maximizes the impact of the LCPA Archives through storytelling, exhibits, and collaborative projects both within and without LCPA. The Director reports to LCPA's General Counsel, and collaborates with leaders across the organization to promote an appreciation of the organization and the campus's historical significance as one of the first performing arts centers of its kind in the United States.

The Director is responsible for creating an inspiring vision and corresponding strategic priorities for the Knowledge and Legacy team. The strategic focus is on increasing understanding of LCPA's history, sustainably expanding LCPA's digital asset management capabilities, gathering documentation of LCPA's performance history, continued processing of LCPA's Archives to increase access, and supporting LCPA's business units. The Director is also responsible for setting and maintaining processes for LCPA departments to follow in support of acquiring current and future digital and physical materials, as well as historical information, into the archives.

What you'll get to do here:

Strategy and Leadership

  • Develop and nurture strong relationships across the organization, and serve as the ambassador for the LCPA Archives across the campus and beyond
  • Manage a talented team, including creating an inspiring and inclusive strategic plan for the Knowledge and Legacy department staff, fostering teamwork and professional development
  • Provide project management for exhibits and special projects, including the development, curation, and installation of the LCPA Archives exhibits in David Geffen Hall
  • Lead presentations and participate in speaking engagements to increase awareness of LCPA's history and the work of the LCPA Archives
  • Facilitate a working group that supports archival work across the eleven resident arts organizations on the Lincoln Center campus

Business Support

  • Serve as a key subject matter expert and storytelling partner for leaders throughout the organization seeking to best utilize insights from the archives
  • Lead the provision of support to business units by pulling together information and clearing media on historic performances and other events, the Lincoln Center campus, and LCPA corporate history for presentations or project needs
  • Support LCPA's strategic priorities in the development of compelling storylines and narratives, utilizing the archives to enrich the organization's artistic programs, events, and initiatives

Archives and Digital Asset Management

  • Identify, appraise, and accession assets, both physical and digital, of enduring historical or research value that document LCPA history, guiding the refinement of processes to capture today's assets as they are created for future accessioning
  • Oversee the continued development of LCPA's implementation of ArchivesSpace to manage the LCPA Archives and describe and provide access to information about them
  • Oversee the continued development of LCPA's digital asset management system to control access, acquire assets, and develop reuse categories, guidelines, and procedures
  • Oversee the integration of information in LCPA's ArchivesSpace implementation with LCPA's digital asset management system
  • Oversee the continued processing and cataloging of the LCPA Archives, both physical and digital
  • Manage the ongoing review of rights in the LCPA Archives, including licensing and rights clearance activities
  • Manage the long-term preservation of the LCPA Archives, both physical and digital, following preservation standards for storage, environmental control, and digital file maintenance
  • Lead the documentation of policies and procedures to ensure business continuity and sustainability
  • Manage requests for loans of material from the LCPA Archives

Records Management

  • Develop LCPA's records management program, implementing departmental policies and procedures to support LCPA's information records, records risk management, and data lifecycle management, including retention schedules and destruction protocols
  • Ensure continued compliance with records retention and information security policies by staying abreast of legal and regulatory developments
  • Oversee the development and promotion of records management best practices companywide, partnering with the Legal, Finance, IT, and People teams at LCPA
  • Manage usage of LCPA's offsite storage facilities

You'll be a fit if you bring:

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience managing an archive, with experience in stewarding both physical and digital material, including manuscripts, art prints, blueprints, realia, microfiche, photographs, posters and other ephemera, electronic records including email, websites, and audiovisual recordings, both analog and digital
  • Experience leading a small team, building processes and procedures, fostering collegiality, and gaining stakeholder buy-in throughout the organization
  • Excellent relationship-building skills to create and nurture partnerships with other institutions, funders, and researchers
  • Experience and strong technical background with archival and digital asset management systems. Experience liaising with IT to develop digital solutions
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including experience educating non-technical stakeholders and working across multiple teams
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, preferably with experience implementing online project management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and translate histories into compelling and nuanced stories to invigorate interest in the LCPA Archives and to gain financial support
  • Experience developing and managing exhibits, including curation, project management, production, and installation
  • Experience and demonstrated sensitivity in providing reference to internal and external audiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and engagement with performing arts history is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of intellectual property law and other issues potentially impacting access to archival materials is preferred
