The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description
The US Data Science (USDS) Personal Auto Modeling group is looking for talent to help drive pricing segmentation for Liberty's lead line. We are expanding our team to increase sophistication and enable complex state solutions, with several openings for individual contributors to help build and implement our Usage Based Insurance (Telematics) and Core Auto Pricing models. This is a great opportunity to combine business acumen with predictive modeling expertise to influence every aspect of the product development process, from product design to model build and deployment.

This is a joint posting for multiple openings across both our Core Auto Pricing and Usage Based Insurance (Telematics) teams. Our US Retail Markets (USRM) Data Science Personal Lines Auto Modeling group is seeking talented individual contributors to develop pricing models, lead research projects, facilitate implementation, and drive technical decision-making for our production Usage Based Insurance (Telematics) and Core Auto Pricing models. Leverage your business acumen, project execution skills, intellectual curiosity, and technical proficiency through both collaborative and independent projects. Analysts will have the opportunity to drive and influence every aspect of the product development process, from product design to model build and deployment.

Successful candidates will have a proven track record of working effectively with team members and stakeholders to develop creative solutions to complex problems, be comfortable with data and modeling, and understand the business goals and strategy. Solid communication and interpersonal skills are critical to the roles, and the individuals we hire will work very closely with their teams and internal partners as we work to test and implement new ideas.

This is a ranged posting, level offered will be based on skills and experience at manager discretion.

This role may have in-office requirements depending on candidate location.

In these roles, you can expect to:
  • Build pricing models and test novel features for Liberty Mutual's UBI and Core Auto programs.
  • Explore and utilize advanced modeling techniques to inform pricing decisions.
  • Translate quantitative analyses and findings into solutions to business problems.
  • Understand clear trade-offs between design choices, with a reasonable view into likely outcomes.
  • Partner with internal and external teams to develop product design and research projects.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to help develop novel research applications.
  • Regularly engage with the data science community and lead cross functional working groups.
Preferred skills and experience include:
  • Ability to correctly specify, build, interrogate, and interpret predictive models. Knows when to build a model, and how to apply the outcome to a business problem.
  • Familiarity with Python, R and/or SQL programming languages.
  • Has experience with project management.
  • Is familiar with version control software (e.g. Git or Bitbucket).
  • Prior experience in insurance, statistics, banking, finance or other regulated industries.
Qualifications
  • Broad knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Expert knowledge of predictive toolset; reflects as expert resource for tool development.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Ability to establish and build relationships within the aligned functional area or SBU.
  • Ability to give effective training and presentations to peers, management and less senior business leaders.
  • Ability to use results of analysis to persuade team or department management to a particular course of action.
  • Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact.
  • Competencies typically acquired through a Ph.D. degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science or other scientific field of study) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, a Masters degree (scientific field of study) and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelors degree(scientific field of study) and a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience.
