Description

The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is seeking a Geospatial Data Scientist to provide actionable, data driven results to inform carbon storage infrastructure development during the transition to a carbon neutral energy future. The successful candidate will have strong Python and GIS skills along with a Geology background.

The salary range for this position is $95K to $105K.

This position will be at the NETL lab in Morgantown, WV or Albany, OR. Only candidates near these areas (or willing to relocate to these areas) will be considered. In addition to working onsite at the lab, some telework may be allowed.

  • Expert domain knowledge of geologic and environmental systems as applicable to developing carbon storage infrastructure.
  • Expert ability to apply geospatial data analytics (including developed AI/ML applications) to complex environmental or geologic problems.
  • Collaborative mindset to work with a team towards actionable, data driven results that inform carbon storage risk assessment and decision making.
  • Experience publishing or presenting scientific findings in a journal or at a conference or workshop.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Use domain knowledge (e.g., environmental, geological, engineering) to evaluate and establish decision making frameworks for carbon storage infrastructure development.
  • Source, organize, and curate data from all available sources and develop the appropriate analytical plan to assess and inform carbon storage or well infrastructure.
  • Conduct necessary data transformations and adapt appropriate AI/ML analytical tools to evaluate the available data to inform carbon storage infrastructure development.
  • Work with software development team to integrate tools and create working user interfaces within established platforms (e.g. Energy Data eXchange® and similar platforms).
  • Publish associated research in scientific journals and present results at workshops and conferences.
  • Collaborate with a dynamic team across diverse domain backgrounds to drive projects towards defined, data driven conclusions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Provide weekly and monthly technical updates to research team members and project management.

Required Education, Experience & Other:

  • Master's degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or related field with 3+ years related experience.
  • Experience with carbon storage or other surface and subsurface energy infrastructure system components with a demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply that knowledge in a decision-making framework.
  • Advanced experience in Python.
  • Expertise with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software/applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ESRI products).
  • Expertise curating, organizing, and producing metadata from all available sources to analyze and evaluate carbon storage and energy infrastructure.
  • Experience working with vector and raster subsurface data, including wellbore attributes, geologic maps, geochemical samples, geophysical, and other critical energy infrastructure datasets.
  • Experience working in a team environment to use geospatial data analytics to inform decision making strategies.
  • Experience managing and analyzing multiple sources and types of spatiotemporal data.
  • Demonstrated experience publishing and presenting scientific findings in journal manuscripts and at workshops and conferences.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $85,150.00 - $153,925.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
