We are seeking a Geological Research Engineer to join our team in Morgantown, WV. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America's energy challenges. The successful candidate will lead the Core Characterization and Analysis efforts within NETL's Geo-imaging Characterization Lab. This effort will include using your geomechanical or geotechnical skills to hold discussions with partners from industry and field test operators as well as developing a core characterization plan and producing key data for modeling group and journal publications. Finally, the successful candidate will develop new capabilities or maintain and upgrade the current Core Characterization and Analysis tool set, based on long-term and short-term research goals. Project efforts include research in energy-related disciplines such as natural gas hydrates, critical minerals, and carbon storage.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform 2D and 3D computed tomography (CT) image analysis including estimation of pore volume, permeability, and mineral grain properties; image segmentation; and fluid-rock interactions.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and analysis of geologic cores to measure hydraulic and geomechanical properties.
  • Lead the preparation of technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
  • Develop and present the results of the research at professional technical conferences/workshops and publish in archival journals.
  • Provide weekly and monthly technical updates to research team members and project management
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary group of science researchers including geologists, geographers, chemists, computer scientists, environmental scientists, and other researchers to accomplish tasks across multiple projects
  • Build relationships with internal and external clients and research partners
  • Provide leadership and expertise on projects including delegation to team members and communication of project milestone status to management.

Required Education, Experience & Other:

  • Master's degree in an Engineering field relevant to geology (e.g. civil, geotechnical, geomechanical, etc.) with 2+ years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to communicate scientific material to a range of audiences (e.g. academic conferences, technical audiences, senior management)
  • Experience in data analysis, report development, scientific writing, and presentation of results
  • Experience estimating and characterizing rock properties such as porosity, permeability, water saturation, wettability, relative permeability, capillary pressure, pressure-dependent rock properties, and mineralogy
  • Experience designing and executing experimental research of pressurized geological cores
  • Experience with image analysis
  • Experience collaborating on a dynamic team
  • Ability to travel to the other NETL campuses (Albany, OR and Pittsburgh, PA) as needed (up to 10%)
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in industry or at field test tests
  • Knowledge of natural gas hydrates and/or carbon storage
  • Experience analyzing computed tomography images
  • Experience coordinating tasks across multiple teams and projects
  • Experience leading a diverse group of research scientists and engineers
  • Experience working for a U.S. national laboratory or as a research site-support contractor

Salary Range for this position: $100K to $110K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00
