The McMurdo Deputy Area Manager is a critical part of the Leadership team reporting to the McMurdo Area Manager. This position is a full time year round position that deploys to McMurdo Station, Antarctica for some or all of the Austral Summer and manages on site activities while deployed (typically October to February). While deployed, this position is the summer site manager for McMurdo responsible for day to day operations in support of science, projects, and sustaining operations, and works to resolve resource conflicts on station to focus efforts on highest priority activities. When not deployed, this position will work with the Area Manager to develop a long term vision for McMurdo, be an active participant in the McMurdo Performance Management Team, and help coordinate cross-functional collaboration and communication in the development of Annual Program Plans.

Deployment to Antarctica will be necessary for this position (approximately 4-6 months/year). The candidate in the position must complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

The anticipated salary range for this role will be $118,000 to $125,000 annually, along with a percentage increase during deployment.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF's Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.
  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Lead ASC representative at McMurdo while deployed
  • Interfaces with NSF Station Manager and NSF Representative as "face" of ASC
  • Supports supervisors, managers and SMEs in communicating with station and stakeholders from all agencies
  • Provides status reporting to ASC and NSF leadership, analyzes available information and offers an assessment with recommended actions
  • Works closely with Leidos HR on personnel issues that arise in McMurdo; oversees implementation of Leidos disciplinary action as the prime contractor
  • Reports to the McMurdo Area Manager and assumes Acting Area Manager responsibilities as delegated by the McMurdo Area Manager
  • Generally deploys to McMurdo station for some or all of the Austral Summer season in Antarctica, approximately from October 1 through February 15. Could occasionally be assigned to deploy elsewhere as needed.
  • Is available 24/7 while deployed to respond to station emergencies, personnel issues or other incidents.
  • Participates in Performance Management Teams and the creation of Area Excellence Plans, Deep Dives, and other reports for ASC and NSF leadership
  • ASC Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Emergency Manager for McMurdo, advising the EOC Director and ASC Emergency Manager during McMurdo emergencies; manages EOC assigned personnel and ensures training requirements are met
  • Works directly with Environmental Health and Safety department and Safety Manager to continuously improve safety culture on station and decrease injuries and property damage on station, ensuring a safe working environment for everyone
  • Ensures compliance with the Antarctic Treaty, the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, the Antarctic Conservation Act, etc.
  • Effectively communicates with the McMurdo community to integrate and implement program priorities and policies
  • Identifies and manages risk and opportunities for McMurdo using ASC processes and programs
  • Monitors McMurdo projects and deconflicts resources across work centers based on program priorities
  • Manages population numbers and population flow for McMurdo Station
  • Oversees inbound and outbound passenger assignments to ensure effective utilization of available space
  • Leads the ASC leadership meeting and the NSF milestone meeting to proactively discuss concerns, challenges, obstacles, and resource conflicts spanning functional areas
  • Proactively interfaces with South Pole, Peninsula and Field Area Management teams as well as department leads to track requirements and identify conflicts
  • Manages and updates McMurdo policies and operating procedures; ensures adherence to McMurdo policies and operating procedures at McMurdo Station
  • Stays informed and engaged with behavioral and personnel issues in order to help correct or address these issues consistently within ASC. Ensures proper and timely reporting of all incidents as necessary and keeps NSF informed of any incidents that may be crimes, any incident involving a safety risk, any incident involving non-ASC or other national program personnel, or any other incident for which this is appropriate. Handles confidential matters in accordance with management policy
  • Oversees alcohol policy on station, in conjunction with Station Services leadership
  • Supports a harassment free workplace for all personnel on station while upholding Leidos values
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support ASC and USAP operations, filling in gaps and ensuring the overall success of McMurdo Station as needed

What Sets You Apart:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and minimum 5 years supporting or managing remote field operations
  • Broad management and leadership experience, specifically leading remote teams and operations, and matrixed multi-skilled organizations
  • Experience leading project management teams, logistics teams or operational teams
  • An understanding of emergency management needs for remote locations
  • Ability to execute independently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work strategically and tactically
  • Strong organizational skills to include time management, task prioritization, and task completion
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong Microsoft Office suite skills
  • Management of work site Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

You May Also Have:

  • Experience managing risk for government programs or remote locations
  • Knowledge of Integrated Master Schedules
  • Experience managing international or global programs, remote sites, and harsh work environments, including diverse and dispersed workforces.
  • Project Management Professional certification
  • Antarctic, Arctic or remote cold region field safety experience is preferred
  • Incident Command System (ICS) certified
  • Incident Management (NIMS) certified
  • An understanding of remote airfield operations including fixed and rotary wing aircraft

Pay Range:

Pay Range $101,400.00 - $183,300.00
