For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.



Backus Hospital’s Emergency Department at Plainfield is a free-standing 12-bed unit, part of Backus Hospital’s emergency room, that cares for patients across the spectrum of age, health, education, etc. The staff includes Registered Nurses, emergency department technicians, Unit Secretaries, Physicians, Mid-Level practitioners, support staff, Public Safety Officers, and in-department radiology. The Emergency Department is equipped with all tools needed to safely care for any patient from central station cardiac monitoring to ultrasound equipment, to our EHR (Epic ASAP). We are a primary stroke center. All staff work together and in a supportive environment to make sure we have a safe environment for our staff & patients, working the most efficiently, and providing the highest level of satisfaction for our staff & patients.



The Nurse Manager is responsible for the comprehensive administration of patient care services for the Plainfield ED. The manager shapes and interprets the philosophy and definition of nursing as it relates short and long term planning, program and staff development, resource and budget management, staffing, performance improvement and healthcare system utilization.


Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:

Graduate of a school of nursing. Bachelors Degree or able to complete within two (2) years required. Effective 6/1/2013, all new hires into this position must have a BSN or MSN.
Experience:
Three (3) years recent acute care experience and two (2) years progressive management or leadership experience.
License and Certification:
Current unrestricted License in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Certification in leadership or clinical specialty or ability to attain within six (6) months of hire. Ability to obtain and maintain BLS within 90 days of hire. Ability to obtain and maintain department specific certifications.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Master’s Degree in Nursing
Experience:
Four (4) years progressive management or leadership experience.
License and Certification:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Certification in Leadership.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
Effectively communicate technical or complex information and present effective and persuasive discussions in order to carry on negotiations with all levels within the organization. Ability to build relationships through support, teambuilding and conflict prevention. Ability to lead through motivating and managing purpose. Ability to develop clinical quality and service orientation. Ability to plan and make decisions with initiative and financial knowledge. Ability to develop all members of the staff through initial recruiting and retention of top talent. Also has the ability to represent WWBH to external agencies and organizations. Current knowledge of equipment, instrumentations and medications with the ability to read and monitor outcomes in the care of a patient.

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Requires high level of analytical ability in order to gather and interpret information from various sources. Requires the ability to take the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances or problems. Full decision making authority regarding department activities, including the ability to change policy.
