Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Supervise the day to day operations of the specimen processing pre-analytical department
- Supervise and support the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab automation and robotics systems.
- Oversee pre-analytical workflows, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Serve as a critical liaison between specimen processing and analytical testing departments
- Coordinate specimen workflow to ensure timely delivery to appropriate testing sections
- Monitor specimen integrity and troubleshoot pre-analytical issues that may impact test results
- Directly supervise, train, and mentor team of lab automation specialists in the department
- Collaborate with engineering, IT, and laboratory teams to optimize workflows and resolve automation issues.
- Monitor daily workflow in the lab and schedule adequate coverage
- Responsible for ensuring all shifts in the department are properly staffed
- Research and resolve any production errors while escalating when necessary
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on process efficiency, error reduction, and workflow standardization.
- Monitor system performance, analyze data, and implement solutions for equipment optimization and downtime reduction.
- Perform quality assurance checks to ensure efficiency and accuracy
- Prepare and maintain Quality Assurance records and documents
- Implement and maintain specimen tracking systems to ensure chain of custody
- Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their development
- Responsible for administering and managing policies and procedures
- Process and maintain payroll and personnel files
- Perform administrative duties as needed
Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in laboratory science, engineering, process engineering or related field preferred
- 3 years of relevant operations experience in a clinical laboratory setting, lab automation, robotics, or pre-analytical operations.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and data analytics
- Understanding of laboratory testing workflows and pre-analytical variables
- High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and prioritization skills
- Previous supervisory or experience leading teams in a laboratory, manufacturing, or automation environment is a plus
- Strong understanding of laboratory automation systems, robotics, and high-throughput workflows
- Proficiency in process and workflow optimization and troubleshooting automated systems.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Experience with CAP, CLIA, or other laboratory regulatory requirements is a plus
- Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies preferred
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisions in a fast paced environment
- Hands-on experience with liquid handling robots, automated specimen processing, or pre-analytical analyzers preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
