The Role

Skytap, a Kyndryl company's Web-MiddleTier Team consists of three engineering teams whose services include the web UI layer, REST API layer, application business logic and orchestration software which programmatically manages our customers' VMs, software-defined storage, and software-defined networks. Skytap is looking for an Architect who will report to the Director of Engineering and work on a variety of engineering projects across the Web-MiddleTier space.

If you have a very strong background in full-stack software development, distributed systems, architecture, operating systems, and the fundamentals of compute, storage, and networking, this position is for you. The Web-MiddleTier Team covers a broad technical domain, and we don't expect you to know everything about all topics. However, you should have expertise in a number of these areas and the ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.

Here's a list of some of the domain areas and technologies on in Web-MiddleTier-Core to give a good idea of the overall technical landscape:

  • Web UI using NodeJS and React
  • Web API application on Ruby on Rails using MySQL
  • Core orchestration layer: distributed systems with high availability, scalability
  • Supporting services for Remote desktop, upload/download/import/export and integration with IBM Cloud and Azure services
  • Service-level indicators (SLIs), service-level objectives (SLOs)
  • Security

Your Responsibilities:

Your work in this role will cover a variety of technical domains and crucial business problems. Here are some sample responsibilities:

  • Lead projects that introduce significant architectural changes spanning the entire application stack from the Web UI, through the business and orchestration layers to our Data Plane services. This includes both individual technical work as well as cooperating with other technical folks.
  • Work with the Director of Engineering and Principal Engineers to identify and drive the overall architecture roadmap of the teams, and prioritize and implement strategic initiatives that benefit the teams. This might involve foundational work to improve reliability, upgradability, observability, application throughput and performance, security, better SDE practices and tooling, and more.
  • Do technical deep dives for hard problems that may arise on any of the three teams, sometimes solo and other times working with other engineers
  • Work with individual Data Plane managers to help with critical projects and also to uplevel the team using your expertise, insight, and leadership skills
  • As the Skytap Product Management and Sales teams identify business opportunities that require improvements to Skytap's platform, work creatively to address these the short term, following up afterward with engineering work to fully productize and solidify those interim solutions

Who You Are

Your Qualifications:

  • Expert understanding of a number of the application areas described above
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and domains quickly and to do deep technical dives (you shouldn't be afraid of reading an RFC or a datagram format, for instance)
  • Programming and software engineering experience
  • Experience running a production service with high uptime requirements
  • Deep Linux systems experience and understanding

The compensation range for the position in the U.S. is $134,160 to $190,000 based on a full-time schedule. Your actual compensation may vary depending on your geography, job-related skills and experience. For part time roles, the compensation will be adjusted appropriately. The pay or salary range will not be below any applicable state, city or local minimum wage requirement. There is a different applicable compensation range for the following work locations:

Washington: $147,600 to $280,320

This position will be eligible for Kyndryl's discretionary annual bonus program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Kyndryl's applicable plans. You may also receive a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical and dental coverage, disability, retirement benefits, paid leave, and paid time off. Note: If this is a sales commission eligible role, you will be eligible to participate in a sales commission plan in lieu of the annual discretionary bonus program.
