The Role

Key Responsibilities:

Installation & Configuration: Install, configure, and maintain IMS databases. Perform system upgrades, patches, and version migrations to ensure the IMS environment is up-to-date and secure. Customize IMS database parameters to meet business requirements and optimize performance.

Database Management: Manage the overall IMS database environment, including defining and maintaining IMS databases, database objects, and system logs. Monitor and maintain IMS buffer pools and other resources to ensure efficient memory usage.

Performance Tuning & Optimization: Monitor IMS database performance, identifying potential bottlenecks or performance issues. Perform tuning of IMS databases to improve overall system efficiency and response times. Analyze and resolve IMS database performance issues.

Problem Resolution & Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and resolve IMS database failures, including abends (abnormal ends), transaction failures, and database errors. Work with application teams, system programmers, and operations staff to resolve database-level issues and minimize downtime. Perform root cause analysis of IMS database issues and implement permanent fixes to prevent recurrence.

Database Maintenance: Support IMS database administration tasks, including database creation, reorganization, and backup/recovery procedures. Monitor database performance and recommend or implement changes to improve data access times and optimize space usage. Ensure database integrity, availability, and recoverability in case of system or application failures.

Security & Compliance: Implement and manage security controls for IMS databases, ensuring only authorized users have access to IMS resources. Maintain compliance with industry standards and internal policies for data security, system access, and audit logging. Ensure IMS databases are prepared for audits and reviews, implementing any required security patches or system changes.

Disaster Recovery & Backup: Participate in regular DR tests to validate database recoverability and update recovery procedures as necessary. Ensure regular backups of IMS databases and maintain procedures for quick restoration.

Documentation & Reporting: Create and maintain detailed documentation for IMS databases, including system configurations, procedures, and recovery plans. Provide regular reports on database performance, resource utilization, and incident resolution. Maintain and update technical documentation to reflect changes to the IMS environment.

Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate with application teams, system programmers, and other IT departments to provide IMS database support and guidance. Communicate with vendors and third-party providers to resolve IMS-related issues or implement database enhancements. Provide support for after-hours or weekend work as needed for database maintenance, upgrades, or issue resolution.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise:
At least 2 years of experience with:

Technical Expertise in IBM IMS and z/OS: A deep understanding of IBM IMS database systems and z/OS operating systems, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and support. Familiarity with IMS database objects, system logs, and buffer pools is crucial

IBM Product Usage: Proficiency in using IBM IMS Administration Tools, IMS DB/DC Tools, and IMS for z/OS Utility suite. Knowledge of SMP/E and proven experience with mainframe software upgrades

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience:
At least 5 years of experience with:

Technical Expertise in IBM IMS and z/OS: A deep understanding of IBM IMS database systems and z/OS operating systems, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and support. Familiarity with IMS database objects, system logs, and buffer pools is crucial

IBM Product Usage: Proficiency in using IBM IMS Administration Tools, IMS DB/DC Tools, and IMS for z/OS Utility suite. Knowledge of SMP/E and proven experience with mainframe software upgrades
