Job Summary

The Inventory Management System (IMS) team is seeking a highly motivated and passionate Senior Process Engineer with expertise relevant to design, construction, and commissioning of industrial scale high-temperature process skids for molten salt systems.

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate detailed IMS system design, including vessels and piping, instrumentation/sensor interfaces, and system structures. The position requires a strong aptitude for engineering analysis, systems integration, and industrial or pilot scale system deployment. You will be expected to regularly interface with multi-disciplinary teams including pipe stress analysis, ASME pressure vessel design, process design, reliability, IC&E engineering, and manufacturing. In this role, you will work closely to the IMS Lead Engineer and will be a critical member of the design team for Hermes, Kairos Power's first-of-a-kind low-power demonstration reactor.

Responsibilities

  • Support IMS Responsible Engineer to design high temperature piping loops, vessels, heaters, and instruments to manage the Hermes Flibe coolant inventory.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support defining hydraulic, thermal, or other design parameters such as pipe size, required pump head, heat loss, hydraulic losses in a pipe loop, etc.
  • Coordinate the design and build of testing platforms such as component prototypes, scaled system demonstrations, and other targeted engineering studies to inform system designs.
  • Independently perform and document calculations and design decisions in concise, clear technical communications such as memorandums, presentations, and reports.
  • Review and redline P&IDs and PFDs to ensure design is accurately represented, meets system requirements, and is technically practical.
  • Develop and document system design, process conditions, modes of operation, required controls and interlocks, and maintenance plans for full plant life cycle.
  • Conduct FMEAs and/or HAZOPs on a highly integrated system.
  • Efficiently collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., mechanical, instrumentation, controls, operations, etc.) to ensure interdependent plant systems’ requirements are met.
  • Create or direct the creation of mechanical drawings for KP-FHR custom Flibe inventory management equipment and coordinate the fabrication with internal manufacturing and procurement teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, Nuclear Engineering, or similar.
  • Relevant industry experience in chemical, refining, power generation, aerospace, or nuclear design engineering (or equivalent industry).
  • Experience with designing systems for hazardous chemicals, molten salts, liquid metals, high-temperature petrochemical processes, or equivalent is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and adapt to interfacing systems' requirements, balance competing design constraints, and produce trade studies or interface tracking documents.
  • Proficient in interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and process equipment datasheets.
  • Knowledge of HazOp process and demonstrated experience designing processes with a safety-first mindset to create robust systems.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating a complex system design through all phases including manufacturing/assembly , testing, pre-commissioning and operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with ASME vessel and piping codes is a plus.
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity for autonomous problem-solving and willingness to own a wide range of technical and non-technical tasks.
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively work with manufacturing/assembly teams to pivot or troubleshoot when hardware build issues are discovered while maintaining delivery schedule.
  • Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions.

Physical Conditions

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.

Environmental Conditions

  • General office environment.
  • High-concentration, demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Occasional laboratory or shop environment exposure (loud noises, PPE required, chemical fumes possible).

Travel

  • Some travel may be required (10%) 

The salary range for this position is $133,900 to $157,500 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role. Candidates with most but not all technical experiences listed under qualification section are welcome to apply for further consideration.
