Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is looking for a highly motivated Nuclear Safety Analysis Engineering Intern to support the Safety Analysis team. In this role, you will collaborate with team members to perform detailed safety analyses that are critical to the development and licensing of the Kairos Power FHR. Your responsibilities will include conducting integral system postulated-event simulations, documenting key analysis outputs, and integrating safety analysis parameters into a centralized database. This work plays a vital role in supporting the reactor design process and licensing our advanced reactor. This internship provides a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of reactor safety analysis and licensing, contributing to the development of transformative nuclear technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform integral system simulations of a first-of-a-kind advanced reactor
  • Collaborate with team members to translate safety analysis methodologies into system-level simulations
  • Develop model performance capabilities to enable postulated event calculations
  • Develop proficiency in KP-SAM, an advanced system-level reactor simulation tool
  • Analyze and post process calculation outputs to evaluate reactor behavior
  • Document calculation outputs to contribute to the reactor license application
  • Support the reactor design process by tracking aspects of Safety Analysis methods

Qualifications

  • Currently a student pursuing MS or PhD Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field 
  • Proficiency with Python for scripting, data analysis, and plotting
  • Proficiency in LaTeX for technical documentation
  • Experience collaborating with version control tools, such as Git
  • Familiarity with nuclear system codes, such as SAM or RELAP
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues

The hourly range for this position is $32-34 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
