The Vice President Global Critical Care Medicine and ECMO is a critical position that will act as the Senior Medical Officer and provide medical and scientific leadership expertise in the area of mechanical circulatory support and the management of patients in the ICU and related clinical disciplines. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer and work closely with the CMO on aligning critical care, ICU, cardiology medical activities and research studies, as well as building the ICU medical liaison team.

The Vice President, Global Critical Care Medicine and ECMO will:

  • Provide relevant clinical, medical, and scientific perspective for the Medical Office and executive leadership team.
  • Serve as a member of the Medical Office Leadership Team, attend monthly business reviews, staff meetings, and global meetings as requested
  • Actively participate in strategic planning processes for development of commercial success targeted at the ICU community providing clinical, medical, and scientific support to execute business specific goals and objectives for market growth through indication and geographic expansion.
  • Work closely with our engineering team to address physician complaints, adverse events, as well as a close collaboration to influence product design and development.
  • Provide medical input into the development of new business models to advance the Impella platform and the science of heart recovery as impacted principally by improved ICU practices.
  • Provide leadership for the Medical Office; including, but not limited to medical oversight, talent management, process improvement, medical safety, and support of adjacent functions (quality, regulatory, clinical).
  • Provide leadership for Impella scientific dissemination and supports the Medical Education function in the area of critical care medicine.
  • Formulate and execute clinical trial strategy and the generation of clinical evidence for best practices in the ICU to improve patient outcomes.
  • Provide clinical validation for key discussions with the FDA, CMS, and other regulatory and reimbursement bodies.
  • Serve as a senior consultant and liaison to specialty societies, advisory boards, and key KOL consultants to enhance Abiomed's global profile and presence within cardiac surgery and heart failure through the Professional Surgical Societies, Surgical Advisory Boards, and other surgeon engagement activities.
  • Participate in Business Development clinical diligence in addition to the business unit clinical teams where applicable.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive physician network globally to understand customer needs and convey the evidence supporting the preferential use of our products and therapies in the ICU setting.
  • Lead and participate in clinician discussions including clinical data interpretation, strategic guidance on evidence development, clinical communications and developing themes in the field, and off-label management in the ICU setting.
  • Collaborate with Regulatory, Reimbursement, Healthcare Economics, and Marketing to develop and execute plans to utilize the results of clinical trials and clinical practice to advance business objectives.
  • Interface with sales and marketing teams globally to build deeper local market knowledge and connections regarding products and best practices for ICU management of Impella. Support global product launches, training, and customer support plans. Collaborate with geography business leaders to create local strategies to advance appropriate use of our therapies.
  • Facilitate strong relationship building with Key Opinion Leaders and other physician customers; build momentum of Impella reputation in marketplace and represent Abiomed and the Impella platform at congresses, conventions, and industry events
  • Moderate clinical investigator meetings, advisory boards, publications committee meetings.


Qualifications

Requirements

  • Medical Degree ("MD" or "DO")
  • Successful completion of post graduate training with active board certification in specialty relevant to cardiac surgery.
  • 10+ years of relevant clinical experience
  • Demonstrated strong public speaking and excellent written communications skills especially regarding controversial topics.
  • Leadership experience, for example holding a department chair position in a hospital
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively within a diverse, global, matrixed organization.
  • Knowledge of clinical research, global marketing, strategic planning, lead six sigma training, biostatistics
  • Domestic and international travel up to 50%

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

    - Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year
    - Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
