Robotics and Digital Solutions, part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech family of companies, is recruiting for a Staff Clinical Engineer for the Strategic Robotics R&D Team. This position is located in Santa Clara, CA.

YOU:

As a member of the Strategic Robotics R&D team you will join us on our journey to design and build one of the world's most advanced medical robotic platforms! You will have the opportunity to define user needs, establish clinical and engineering requirements, consider clinical risks, and identify solutions to guide product development. This role offers high autonomy and growth opportunities within the team as we progress towards realizing our vision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leverage comprehensive clinical, technical, and design control expertise to collaborate with cross-functional teams in discovering, defining, developing, and validating a new portfolio of products ranging across the entire program.

• Research relevant disease states, treatment options, patient pathways, surgical techniques, and competitive technologies.

• Work across the organization to lead the discovery of unmet clinical needs, establish customer requirements and provide clinical input to engineering design requirements.

• Design and implement test models and methodologies to facilitate evaluations of product performance in clinically relevant scenarios.

• Partner with physicians and key clinical users to develop novel procedural techniques, gather product feedback, and integrate their insights into product iterations.

• Develop new product clinical workflows, conduct clinical risk assessments, and propose effective mitigations for identified hazards.

• Establish a robust design validation strategy to ensure the product meets all customer requirements and performs reliably in clinical settings.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS :

• Hold a degree in engineering (e.g. Biomedical/Bioengineering, Mechanical, Electrical) and have a minimum of 8 years of related work experience in medical device development (PhD/MD + 4yr, MS + 6yr or BS + 8yr)

• Extensive knowledge of surgery, surgical procedures, and the OR environment.

• Outstanding problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a focus on identifying technical challenges and driving innovative solutions.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, clinicians, and external partners.

• Experience designing and conducting pre-clinical engineering studies to assess product performance and safety.

• Proven ability to translate customer needs into clear engineering design requirements, ensuring alignment with product development goals.

• Proficient in identifying potential clinical risks and conducting thorough clinical harm analyses to enhance patient safety and product reliability.

PREFERRED

• Advanced degree (Masters, PhD, MD)

• Strong knowledge of relevant regulations and standards for medical devices and robotic surgery platforms, including FDA regulations and guidance, and IEC and ISO standards.

• Demonstrated success in leading and delivering complex projects from inception to completion.

• Have the ability to travel up to 15% of the time, internationally and domestic

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $139,000 to $224,924. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
