The early therapeutic area lead (eTAL) in nonclinical safety (NCS PSL) is a senior leadership role that primarily sits in the interface between PSTS and the therapeutic areas. The NCS TAL may be a manager but is primarily seen as a scientific leader role with significant "matrix" management responsibility, serving as the coach and mentor for the NCS leads who work on the projects as assigned in the therapeutic area portfolio. This role is assigned specifically to support the Immunology portfolio and has responsibility for projects that cover multiple modalities primarily from target selection to candidate nomination. The eTAL has significant experience in drug development and regulatory sciences and has specialized knowledge and passion for the therapeutic area. The eTAL faces TA leadership in TA forums and development stage gate forums, and, as needed to stand in as delegate for PSTS Global Head. The eTAL is accountable for recommendations for diligence (including review and coaching of NCS diligence point person). The primary role of the eTAL is to provide coaching and mentorship for NCS Leads working in their portfolio including mandatory advice and review of toxplans, protocols with the purpose of assuring scientific and regulatory questions are proactively addressed. The eTAL is expected to maintain scientific depth and expert working knowledge of competitive intelligence and regulatory landscape in Immunology arena and to tracks milestones, issues, and attrition and should highlight strategic gaps in PSTS for action for Immunology area. The eTAL may also serve as the NCS lead or lead delegate as needed. The eTAL will lead or participate in special strategic projects as needed.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as NCS eTAL managing/coaching NCS leads who work in the Immunology therapeutic area space, this includes reviewing and providing advice on toxplans, study proposals, outputs, for Immunology projects covering multiple modalities from the nomination of a target through candidate selection
- Serves as the NCS eTAL and primary NCS participant in portfolio governance stage-gate or other review forums, and provides coaching/reviewing/recommendations for diligence in the Immunology therapeutic area space, includes interface with stakeholders outside of NCS
- Drives strategic planning for PSTS preparedness to operate in the Immunology therapeutic area space, including NCS playbook content, providing management updates, fostering cross-industry activities and forums with regulators and external experts
- Serve as manager for NCSLs based in La Jolla who work on projects across the portfolio.
- Participates and/or helps to drive general training and advice forums for NCS leads who work on other parts of the JJIM portfolio. As a member of NCSS / NCS-PSL is generally involved in recruiting and onboarding new staff, and overall PSTS operations and strategic planning.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- PhD with a minimum of 15 years of relative experience or MS, BS with a minimum of 20 years of relative experience;
- Preferred area of study- Toxicology, Pharmacology in Immunology, Pharmaceutic science, Cell Biology, Pathology, or Chemistry/biochemistry
- Post-doctoral experience
- Pharmacology or toxicology experience in drug development company preferred
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical science, drug development of multiple modalities, and therapeutic area science and toxicology strategies, regulatory requirements/expectations for first in human approval or registration of pharmaceutics/biologics.
- Certification in toxicology, veterinary or medical school, or pathology (MD, DVM, DABT or DACVP) preferred
- Experience with development of molecules through M3 and S6 preferred
- Experience in dealing with FDA or other regulatory interactions and practice in working with clinicians preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication, appropriate for executive or high visible external venues.
- Experience in effective coaching.
- Strong organizational skills and team leadership.
- Maintain strong external visibility to assure strong external reputation for PSTS.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $193,000 to $333,500.
