This role is accountable for the performance of larger more sophisticated projects and base business projects for a R&D Facility. The role requires leadership capabilities to drive a team to perform at a high performance level through Project Execution and flexible application of scalable processes required through the ideation, definition, execution and assessment phases of a project. The chosen candidate will be expected to drive innovation to ensure safe, Best In Class project execution with a focus on optimizing cost and schedule commitments. Additional expectations of this role include but are not limited to- Learning adaptability through internal and external education and Supervising commissioning, qualification, and validation of FDA, AAALAC and USDA technology transfers and regulations governing a Live Science Research Laboratory facility.

This role requires strong leadership, customer engagement, and strong planning skills to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget while adhering to the highest standards of compliance and operational efficiency. The preferred candidate will excel in balancing resources, leading a multidisciplinary project team, and communicating the business impacts to senior leadership.

A suitable candidate for this role will have experience in leading all aspects of projects from concept to completion. Knowledge of process engineering, the pharmaceutical industry and a R&D Animal Welfare facility is preferred.

Key relationships include collaboration with key E&PS Functions (Real Estate, Workplace Experience, Facilities Management and Service Partners), Procurement, EH&S, ITS, and affiliate Engineering Groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Takes Project Lead on Projects at the appropriate stages of execution.
  • Lead facility-related projects, including infrastructure upgrades, laboratory renovations, and compliance attainment.
  • Builds collaboration across all applicable functional areas.
  • Build strong relationships with diverse partners, including scientists, researchers, and executives. Aligns Core and Extended team to deliver the projects seamlessly.
  • Collaborate with highly educated customers to translate technical needs into actionable project requirements.
  • Craft and deliver compelling presentations, tailored to various audiences, that articulate business impacts, risks, and justifications for capital investments.
  • Lead prioritization discussions with customers, balancing operational needs, compliance requirements, and financial constraints.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive project plans, encompassing scope, schedules, budgets, and risk mitigation strategies. Supervise progress against project Key Outputs.
  • Establishes Key Performance Indicators and puts plans in place to meet and identify areas for improvement.
  • Facilitates the project intake process, assisting in solutioning and how projects should meet the Business Need. Prepares for Stage Gates, and the development of the selected option for Capital Approval Request (CAR) approval.
  • Figures out appropriate project functions, resources, and strategies for the Project Delivery Processes and tools via a Project Execution Plan, based on the complexity of the project business strategies, policy, regulations, and all local and national legislation.
  • Develops Risk Management methodology to identify, evaluate, and handle risks to project deliverables, including resource issues and other obstacles. Communicate risks associated with deferring or accelerating projects to senior business leaders.
  • Facilitate scenario planning to help customers understand the implications of project decisions on business operations and long-term goals.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the design, execution, and close out of all project-related activities including leading internal resources and the procurement of third-party contractors, suppliers, and consultants and tracking the project against the plan to ensure delivery of Final Project Objectives.
  • Identifies potential project scope and/or cost changes and handle the requests with the Sponsor, Core, and Extended teams.
  • Facilitates Project Close Out activities ensuring operational handover archiving, financial project close and collation of benchmarking and lessons Learned. Enable continuous improvement via lessons collection and lessons adoption.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to the project team, including project managers, master schedulers, finance controllers, and document controllers.
  • Develop a workload balancing framework to assign projects based on skills, availability, and project complexity.
  • Mentor team members on standard processes for project management, including customer communication, risk management, and timeline optimization.
  • Establish clear processes for tracking and reporting project progress, ensuring timely delivery of real-time updates to customers on project performance and risks.
  • Implement tools and processes to streamline resource allocation, improve data reliability, and reduce project delays.
  • Drive innovation in project delivery, integrating standard processes, sustainability initiatives, and innovative technology.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Project Management, Engineering, or Architecture required. Masters degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of related experience.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Prior experience leading medium to large capital projects in Supply Chain, R&D, Distribution Centers, or Offices.
  • Understands business needs and can translate these to engineering concepts. Customer-centric approach.
  • Technically knowledgeable, can relate to and understand complex technology-based issues.
  • Process-centric, process knowledgeable.
  • Excellent listening and problem-solving skills when handling potential issues.
  • Understanding complex technical/regulatory issues impacting pharmaceutical scientific studies.
  • Track record of developing and maintaining strong partnerships at all levels within the organization, internally (Real Estate, Facilities Management), and with Business partners (CCFS/ Finance/ Engineering/ Operations).
  • Good understanding of Project Controls in project development, financial assessments, and handling of Budget and Schedule
  • Versed in contract negotiations.
  • Consistent track record to lead and develop multidisciplinary teams, promoting accountability and collaboration.
  • Strong organizational skills to balance workloads, optimize resource allocation, and handle complicated priorities.
  • Ability to mentor and support team members to meet high standards of performance
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and align diverse customers.
  • Proficiency in communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Expertise in facilitating prioritization and decision-making among senior leaders.
  • Analytical mentality to evaluate trade-offs and recommend actionable solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Microsoft Project, and PowerPoint required.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with J&J Project Management approaches (FPX & Project Delivery Process).
  • Educated in areas of LEAN implementations.
  • AAALAC and USDA experience for Animal Welfare research and development laboratory facility.
  • Versed in technologies being applied/integrated in project execution.
  • Familiar with AI and its potential applications for improving Construction and Project Deliver performance from an efficiency and cost standpoint.
  • Advanced skills in creating and communicating capital justifications with clear return on investment analysis.
  • Resilient and adept at navigating customer dynamics.

Other:

  • Proficiency (oral & written) in the English language is required.
  • This position will require up to 25% domestic and international travel.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent preferred.
  • The anticipated base pay range for this position is $120,000 to $207,000.
  • In California Bay Area - The anticipated base pay range for this position is $138,000 to $238,050.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
