The Senior Environment, Health & Safety Specialist will provide technical expertise in the areas of workplace safety, environmental compliance and sustainability, risk reduction, hazard assessments, chemical assessments, accident investigations, and emergency response planning. Also, provide oversight of EHS compliance programs (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc) and EHS Management Systems, including conformation to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001 Standard; J&J Worldwide Environmental, Health and Safety Corporate Standards, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing and implementing Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies and operating procedures. Regularly review and assess existing programs to ensure compliance, identify opportunities for improvement, and drive continuous enhancement of the EHS Management System.
- Enhances workplace by identifying, documenting, and actively monitoring potential EHS hazards to people and property.
- Conducts compliance audits by collecting regulatory and company data, evaluating and analyzing the information, and performing EHS risk assessments and audits at both the site and external facilities.
- Completes hazard risk assessments, work permits and Management of Change reviews, including site and project walkthroughs, and ensures identification of hazards/risks and appropriate mitigations.
- Leads projects and initiatives to achieve EHS goals and targets, such as reducing safety incidents, minimizing waste generation, and improving ergonomics.
- Conducts compliance inspections including weekly waste inspections, monthly/ safety inspections, and routine fire code compliance inspections, etc.
- Fields and responds to all EHS-related inquiries, complaints, and feedback, while identifying opportunities to improve site programs-such as associate engagement, injury/incident reduction, and waste minimization-and developing and implementing action plans.
- Reviews Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemical purchases or change requests and completes Chemical EHS evaluations, retains the Chemical Inventory up-to-date.
- Evaluates, documents, tracks and trends EHS Program initiatives including incidents, injuries, waste data, good saves, and provides summary reports.
- Serves as an active member of the site Emergency Response Team, leading and responding to emergencies, conducting incident investigations, and tracking corrective actions.
- Plans and executes employee awareness and engagement activities, including Safety Month, Earth Day, Environmental Sustainability Month, EHS fairs, household hazardous waste collection days, and laboratory chemical clean-out events.
Qualifications
Education:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering field or equivalent is required.
Experience and Skills:
Required:
- A minimum of 2 years as a EHS Specialist or related work experience.
- Proficient in computer applications (e.g., Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with the ability to enter and analyze data in spreadsheets and database applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, associates, the public, and regulatory agencies, with strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing at all levels within the organization.
- Must be able to work independently with general supervision, demonstrating attention to detail, the ability to follow directions, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Preferred:
- EHS compliance trainings completed (ie. RCRA, 30-Hour OSHA, DOT, HAZWOPER).
Other:
- This position may require a up to a 15% of domestic and/or international travel.
