Position Overview:

The Global Automation Engineering Group showcases talented professionals, world-class technologies and innovative solutions that "power" the quality and performance of Abiomed's heart pumps. The Senior Automation Engineer provides engineering and technical resource expertise to maximize the Global Automation Engineering Group's contribution to company performance.

The Senior Automation Engineer serves as one of the leaders of the technical community, working effectively and collaboratively with all technical disciplines and functions, both internally and externally, developing new technologies and processes for existing and new product production. This role is responsible to design, build and implement the most cost-effective manufacturing controls hardware and software to meet the automation needs of a very dynamic and technically challenging business.

Abiomed, a division of J&J Medical Device, is an innovative medical device company dedicated to recovering hearts and saving lives. Through its Impella pump systems, Abiomed seeks to expand its production capabilities, automation capabilities and control systems. Abiomed Inc. is based in Danvers, Massachusetts.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

The successful candidate will primarily focus on the design, development and delivery of robust, in-control, on-target, and capable assembly processes. The Sr. Automation Engineer role is relevant for various disciplines and scope, and in this case is targeting support for Global Automation Engineering with the design, development, specification and implementation of all end-to-end manufacturing equipment and processes. This includes the development of automated equipment for assembly processes; continuous operational improvement efforts, supply chain capacity expansion support and new product / assembly transformation development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or like engineering field preferred

• Minimum of 6 years of hands-on automation design, process development and / or operational improvement / support incorporating discrete component assembly and joining technologies

• Electro-mechanical aptitude required

• Process knowledge of making and joining of discrete components a strong plus

• Hands on approach to design, development and project execution required

Preferred Skills and Competencies:

• Involved in the design, support and implementation of assembly processes and packaging equipment for the production of Abiomed's pumps.

• Develop engineered assembly solutions using computer modeling and analysis.

• Lead & participate in design reviews, hands on assembly, debug and integration of discrete component assembly machines

• Participate and potentially lead continuous improvement efforts, obsolescence programs, technology transfers and new product development will also be required in support of business objectives.

• Test, debug, and qualify completed equipment to the required specifications and performance criteria at both the supplier's and Abiomed's location.

• Knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks) a strong plus

• Identify and mitigate risks associated with automation functionality, reliability, safety, COGs and manufacturing scalability

• Design, setup and execute feasibility tests

• Work with cross-functional teams within the organization to deliver projects and required project scope

• Work with and manage external suppliers, conduct DFM reviews, and go onsite as needed

• Develop fixtures and tooling to assemble and test early-stage prototypes

• A demonstrated rigorous, disciplined and hands-on approach to design, assembly, vendor interaction and execution a strong plus

  • Metrology understanding including fixturing, lighting, repeatability, reproducibility and equipment used in precision metrology is required
  • Hands on knowledge and use of metrological devices, calipers, micrometers, shadow graphs, pins, gauge blocks, depth gauges etc. is required
  • Provide hands on execution of aligned test plans, creation of test plans and ability to execute plans
  • Fundamental knowledge and skills in Design of Experiments (DOE), Gauge R&R, TMV, Statistical Process Control and Capability and Targeting Statistics required
  • Lead and / or participate in the definition of the overall acceptance testing plan for assigned projects
  • FDA acumen in a medical device or regulated industry is a plus
  • Management and oversight of vendor communications and collaboration is required. Ability to critically review, engineering designs and assess risks to transform materials into finished product is required.
  • Ability to successfully lead teams and vendors to achieve exceptional results is a plus
  • Knowledgeable in automation, close tolerance assembly, component feeding, robotics, material handling, servo systems, metric and imperial standards a plus

• Ability to effectively communicate (verbal/written) at multiple levels of an organization
