An exciting scientific leadership opportunity is open in the Immunotoxicology group within Preclinical Sciences and Translational Safety's Pathobiology Organization at Johnson & Johnson for a highly skilled and critically thinking scientific leader that works exceptionally well in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

Primary responsibilities:

• Support portfolio progression of new therapeutics across therapeutic areas and multiple drug modalities (e.g. biologics, small molecules, oligonucleotides, gene therapy, cell therapy, and peptides) by evaluating and characterizing potential and observed immunotoxicological risks and immunopharmacological mechanisms.

• Make recommendations to drug discovery and development teams and communicate experimental rationale and scientific strategies to decipher/predict mechanisms of potential safety signals on the immune system.

• Independently lead investigative strategies/studies to explore mechanisms of immunotoxicity/immunopharmacology using appropriate technologies, including flow cytometry, specialized imaging, differentiated stem cell culture models, complex and long-term primary cell culture models, biochemical assays, and multiplex immunoassay systems.

• Interpret and communicate complex data sets to deliver timely and decisional quality insights to inform decision-making processes throughout program progression from target characterization to the clinic.

• Serve on drug discovery & development teams as an active scientific matrix leader providing immunotoxicology expertise for our expanding portfolio, while also being directly involved in matrix leadership and mentorship to our technologically advanced La Jolla, California-based laboratory.

• Interfacing with CRO partners for collaborating on immunotoxicology analyses on in vivo toxicology studies, addressing health authority queries on cross-functional teams, participating in issue resolution teams, and managing laboratory strategy and operations as well as data integrity initiatives.

• Expand breadth of knowledge and external influence by maintaining professional memberships in external organizations (eg. SOT, ACT, BioSafe, HESI Immunosafety Committee) and attend and/or participate in scientific meetings to increase visibility of self and J&J Innovative Medicine, through external presentations and publications.

• Support career development and immunology learnings across the organization.

Qualifications

Education:



• Bachelor's degree required

• Master's degree or PhD within the field of Immunology, Toxicology or related field highly preferred

Required:

• 8+ years of working specifically with Immunotoxicologic considerations in Drug Discovery & Development

• Abundant wealth of experience that translates into a high level of independence in executing the role and responsibilities of a scientific leader

• Proven ability to develop complex assays (eg. T-cell activation assays, cytokine release hazard identification, myeloid cell activity, platelet activation and binding assessments, and/or culturing of primary leukocytes) and employ high-end technologies

• Flow cytometry expertise

• Demonstrated ability to research, identify, develop and transfer assays, and collaborate with CROs supporting immunotoxicological studies & risk assessment

• Demonstrated track record of leading and strategizing in vitro and in vivo studies to investigate unexpected adverse findings involving immunologic (e.g., immediate hypersensitivity, mast cells, complement activation) systems

• Demonstrated ability to develop biomarkers for measuring in vivo therapeutic-induced immunologic changes in preclinical species

• Demonstrated track record of ensuring the quality, timeliness, and compliance of project deliverables, including data integrity and best practices for laboratory workflows and workplace safety

• Experience mentoring laboratory staff as well as matrix leadership on project issue related teams

• Excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively across project teams

Preferred:

• Experience addressing health authority comments/questions on immunotoxicologic safety concerns

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $135,000 to $232,300.
The anticipated base pay range for this position in the California Bay Area is $166,000 to $267,145.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

    • Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year
    • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington - up to 56 hours per calendar year
    • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
