The Senior Principal Scientist will design, develop, and lead the execution of impactful data science projects delivering insights and analytics that shape commercial development of our clinical-stage pipeline. Working with the Senior Director, Global Data Science, Oncology and in close partnership with Global Commercial Strategy Organization (GCSO) partner teams, you will use your deep technical expertise and pharmaceutical industry knowledge to advance the application of leading data science analytical methodologies to domain-specific data assets to drive insights and decisions that optimize the patient benefit and commercial value of the pharmaceutical pipeline.

Major responsibilities include evaluating available and potential data sources, driving data strategy to strengthen our analytics, evaluating and developing end-to-end solutions, leading and implementing specific data science projects by applying creative approaches and innovative algorithms within commercial analytics, and advancing data-driven decision-making and data science practice across GCSO. Key partnerships include commercial analytics, medical affairs and market access within GCSO as well as regional commercial analytics and scientific affairs teams, J&J Technology (JJT) data sciences, R&D Data Science, JJT, global epidemiology, and others.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a hands-on technical leader for the Global Data Science team, instituting leading practices, and modeling and enabling a data-driven culture
- Develop and provide deep subject matter expertise and leadership on Data Science AI/ML methods, algorithm / model development, and their application to global commercial analytic business questions
- Effectively navigate technological, analytical, legal, and privacy complexities to achieve objectives
- Use AI/ML to transform our commercial strategy operations through impactful analytics projects that improve GCSO strategic decisions
- Interact with and influence asset and disease area teams across Commercial, Medical Affairs, and Market Access on outcomes and insights from specific data science projects
- Closely partner across Global Data Science and across GCSO to define the priorities and both collaboratively and pragmatically build a roadmap to deliver specific use cases
- Define data and analytics strategies and methods for specific Data Science projects across GCSO
- Assess the financial implications and rationale for Data Science investments and help communicate overarching return on investment, business value drivers, success metrics, etc.
- Partner outside of GCSO with the regional businesses, global epidemiology, R&D, JJT, Legal, HCC and others in the development of the Data Science strategy and guidelines for insight generation and usage
- Contribute actively to internal J&J Data Science communities of practice, sharing methodologies and improving enterprise Data Science knowledge and capacity
- Positively impact project teams and set standards of excellence for the team by demonstrating technical expertise, strong work ethic, integrity, and professional behavior
- Work side-by-side with colleagues across Global Commercial Data Science to deliver integrated approaches to deliver on high value use cases / problems
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Masters degree in a quantitative field such as computer science, computational biology, statistics, epidemiology or related. PhD/PharmD/MD preferred.
- At least 4 years of relevant experience in healthcare or life sciences industry is required
- At least 4 years of relevant hands-on data science experience in a commercial, medical affairs, scientific affairs and/or R&D environment is required
- Strong problem-solving skills with a solution-oriented mindset
- Knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling methods for supervised and unsupervised learning, including (but not limited to) regression analysis, clustering, outlier detection, decision trees, ensemble methods and boosting, and neural networks
- Strong Python or R programming skills with experience working with relevant software and tools such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), SQL, business intelligence tools, A/B testing, etc.
- Specific data science experience within Oncology preferred
- Proven ability to influence in a large, sophisticated organization
- Experience in developing, communicating, advocating for, and delivering long-term strategies
- Proven experience in prioritizing and leading a complicated portfolio of projects
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- This position may require up to 10% domestic travel.
- The anticipated base pay range for this position is $137,000 to $235,750 USD.
- The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
