The Senior Director, Compound Development Team Leader will lead cross-functional compound development teams (CDTs) that design and execute our early development strategies to advance our assets to clinical proof of concept in alignment with our Ophthalmology and Neuroscience therapeutic area strategy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- In partnership with Discovery and line functions, establish a development plan spanning LLO to NME-declaration to ensure a robust monograph package that supports preclinical and early clinical development of the asset
- Lead the design and implementation of a robust cross-functional early development strategy for designated NME(s)/assets beginning with preclinical development through clinical proof of concept
- In partnership with line functions, maximize the potential for early decision-making and portfolio prioritization by leveraging innovative fit-for-purpose development paradigms to assess whether the asset can meet target product profile/quality standards
- In partnership with Late Development and Commercial functions, establish clinical proof of concept study/studies that supports late clinical development
- Lead CDTs to drive compound development, enable effective strategy planning and decision making, and achieve governance strategic alignment with senior leaders
- Actively contribute to compound strategy decision-making by ensuring relevant research, analysis, and expertise are available
- Accountable for overall budget and project plan deliverables, and risk mitigation strategies
- Ensure effective planning and negotiate with stakeholders to secure resources that the CDT needs to achieve its goals and objectives while minimizing cost and time without sacrificing quality; proactively anticipate and address strategic and operational needs and challenges to resolve critical risks and communicate to all stake holders
- Champion the asset at all levels of J&J while bringing the portfolio perspective to the CDTs
- Build high performing teams and contribute to development of CDT members via feedback and mentoring
- Represent the CDTs among external stakeholders and ensure effective relationship with alliance partner(s) on partnered compounds
- Collaborate with Business Development and External Innovation on assessing external compounds and companies and due diligences.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES/DETAILED DUTIES:
- May also represent the CDTs on various cross functional committees
- May lead cross-functional/therapeutic area/company initiatives outside the CDTs
- May participate in portfolio/strategy committees within the DAS/TA
- Participate on and may lead cross-functional teams for evaluation of new scientific opportunities, disease areas, product ideas, implement franchise business strategies, etc.
- Reviews medical literature and related new technologies
- May be asked to assess medical publications emerging from the Team and its affiliates

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
• MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent degree with appropriate post-doctoral training
• Preferred experience leading compound development teams, preferably in ophthalmology or neuroscience areas
• Strong track record of producing results in a matrix-based environment
• Requires at least 7 years of experience in early research and development (preclinical or early clinical), pharmaceutical experience is preferred.
Required Technical Knowledge and Skills:
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Outstanding leadership, influence and communication skills
• Strong problem-solving skills for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives
• Strong project planning and tracking skills including strategic thinking and contingency planning
• Ability to work cross-functionally with interdisciplinary teams and experience working in a matrix organization
• Detailed and thorough understanding of the entire drug development process and familiarity with pharmaceutical portfolio risk management. Must understand requirements for successful commercialization of a new product
• High degree of organizational awareness and understanding of change management
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $193,000 to $333,500 USD.
